I've had a bear rug and half life size bear done by Ray Weins. He used to be in Aldergrove but he just recently moved out to Merrit. He does awesome work, I won't use anyone else.

Bear rugs cost a good penny and take up a lot of wall space...so most people only will rug one bear. Make sure it's a good one.
I still have yet to rug one. Tanned a few and sold a few.

Nothing shrinks an "8 FOOT" bear, like an 8 foot wall...........

Not directed at you Brent, your post just made me laugh, thinking of all the exaggerated lengths that go with a lot of the "average" bears that get posted online.

You get what you pay for. Harley White is the best. Period.

When speaking in generalities, every taxidermist usually has a certain species or a few species he excels at. For example, and without names, there are many taxis that flat out SUCK at doing cats, while their work on other species is very good.

If we're talking bears, I've had a few done by Bernie Jaeger out of Vernon and would recommend his work.

But they still have ears:shock:
The ones I have seen from Harly the ears were laid out so flat there were non existent and they were not "big" bears .

Not questioning his work , just not my cup of tea so to speech .

Generally pricing $100-$150 a foot? Or even more? Someone told me once to budget around $1000 I think?

I can see why along with space to display it, it would be a one and done type thing. Lot of dough for something to sit in a box if doing more than one.

Black Powder in the Fraser Valley did one for me. $400. Not really a rug - no felt, no skull, no eyes. They did skin out paws. Nice work, nice people. Probably a 5' bear (not big, not small either).

A rug is going to run you around $1000-$1300 for a decent size bear. Could be a bit more depending if the taxidermist gets a lot of his materials from the US, that exchange rate is screwing everything!

If your getting quotes of 4 or $500, it's either a very small bear or it's just a tanned hide, a rug for a decent sized bear will be $1000+.

Keep in mind, most taxiderms I have dealt with take half up front and half on delivery.
So it takes the sting out of swallowing the $1200 bill all at once.

Good work, costs good money.
Go with quality first.

Ray Wiens has been doing my stuff lately. Great quality and good guy to deal with.

They may have just been tanned actually. I haven't official spoken to anyone so that was a estimate. The bear was 71 inch long. How long is the wait for a rug few months. Never had anything like this done

Mine took 2 years but the guy is known for being very slow but he does good work and is on the cheaper side, $150 per linear foot after stretching/mounting. This included head, paws, eyes, open mouth, and felt with a double layer of denim underneath.

Were you the one who started a thread and posted the photos of the process? Had it stretched on the uprights for your back deck? Or something like that? How many have you done now?

Was it worth the learning curve and what not?

I guess better put, if you could do it over again would go through the process of learning it again?

Cariboo-Chicoltin Taxidermy by 100 mile house has done a couple for my buddies. He does great work. He charges 235 a foot plus 125 to skin the head and paws. For a descent bear you are looking closer to 1500.

It will run in the $200/linear foot......approx. Some taxis will be 6months to a year. While others approach a decade( wish I was joking)

V'ing the body and having the ears back makes the rug streamlined and it looks way better. I've seen rugs where the ears are straight up erect and to me, it doesn't look good, (might even look like your neighbors lab). Maybe it's not a natural position when one considers the open mouth, although most open mouth aren't natural either as bears don't have the muscles in their lips to snarl like a dog. Bottom line is, it'll look better. Just MHO.

I had my first bear rug done at Truestyle Taxidermy in Prince George. They did a great job. I got to see lots of other rugs they were working on in their shop and they all looked excellent as well. Their pricing seemed a bit on the high side would be my only complaint...

working on my second now, third one in the freezer waiting to be done. wasnt me with pics on here before, but i will definitely keep doing it, got exponentially better from the first to the second and understand more and more about it everytime i touch it. i will continue doing my own for life, im sure theyre not as nice as the ones the pros do, but free is free.
