It's dry out! Big winds dry climate up in 7b, watch your fires controlled or not, +28 out today in the peace, few fires already.

It's serious. Evacuations in Baldonnal, Taylor area and near Buick. Highway 29 between Charlie Lake and Hudsons Hope is closed.

48 fires in the peace region already. If this continues July and August are going to be scary. They claimed a state of emergency already

Saw all the alarm posts on FB page of BC fires. It's barely mid April, definitely pay attention out there.

We were "refugees" in Kelowna in 2003. Fortunately we didn't get burned out like a lot of others. Hope you don't have any serious problems up there.

Good luck to you guys. We sent crews this morning to clear burnt trees so powerlines could be rebuilt. Crazy year for sure. Two fires in PG city limits yesterday. Got them under control quickly.

Just got back from working the EOC for a few days.....was good to get back and involved, even if it was on the outside!!! Now watching a big smoke plume out toward Cecil lake....believe it or not, some farmers were still lighting up.......

Things are slowing down and other than the big fire up off the Beatton Airport Rd (5500 ha+), the Pine fire and and the Lone Prairie fire (850 ha+) most are either in mop-up or patrol. Evac notices have been rescinded and people are allowed to get back to living their life....

Hydro is working hard to get things back to normal and then the long road to replacing all the poles and transmission lines back up will begin.

More crews are on their way and with mother nature helping out, the fires should be on their way out.

Cheers

Having a huge wind event like that in the "spring dip" is always dangerous.

Spring dip is where the grasses have not greened up and the other trees have not broke their state of dormancy. The foliar moisture content is at its lowest point of the year.

Been thru a couple of these events when I lived in vanderhoof.

However, once the wind subsides, the fires are pretty easy to corral...

It is in NO WAY an indication of how the rest of fire season will be..

I fully agree Mike. We had crossover on Monday and it was a strange day...the morning was dead still and erie quiet, then the winds came up and things started to go sideways. The perfect storm as the papers put it.

29 deg, 24% RH, sustained 50-60 k winds and downed power lines/farmers burning off fields and holder over burn piles all contributed to a sh*t storm........

Cheers

This MIGHT be the first burns of a severe fire season, or, BC could get rain from May through next Sept. I have seen more "Fire Weather Forecasts" that were not "on" than I care to remember and we can only wait and hope.

Much of this problem is the decades of underfunding/staffing of the BCFS and BOTH political parties are complicit in that, as votes come out of various "blocs" in the Lower Mainland and south-central BC........grants to newcomers equal votes and everything else is usually "beyond Hope".

Wish I was young again, I used to be pretty good at detection/suppression and I enjoyed it.
