Since we purchased our travel trailer I am wondering whether to purchase a self loader boat rack for my 12 foot aluminum boat or a pontoon boat I can carry in the 6 foot 6 inch truck box. I can not see me using the loader a lot and it is a 3500.00 touch.

I bought a 12 foot pontoon boat similar to a zodiac. Best move ever as I. Also pull a 27 ft trailer and don't want the cost of a boat rack.

if you look on Craigslist Vancouver there was a older guy selling them for $1650 and a $200 install fee.(nice units, a buddy bought 1) if you can afford the loader do it, inflatables are terrible in the wind

Hmm get the boat loader! Have had one on my truck for 20 years..boat efforlessly stored on the top, leaves the box clean for use..
We often tow our trailer, boat over the canopy, atv inside the canopy..best use of space..better boat.

I got the Rhino Rack side Loader. Good for up to 80 kg boat. Also frees up the box and don't have to unhook your trailer if you dont want to.

It all depends what kind of fishing you'r planning on doing, small lakes; large lakes; streams; with an other person or two or all by yourself. Pontoon boats are great fishing by yourself on small lakes. You can fish them on large lakes but you really have too watch the weather. The great thing about pontoon boats is they can break down fairly small for traveling and set backup quickly. A boat loader on a canopy is a great way to go to, you just back up to the lake and just unload your boat right into the lake and you'r fishing. Me personally I own a outcast pontoon boat and love fly fishing out of it but I all so have a 12ft. lund JON boat that I'm getting a boat loader on my canopy this spring for fishing bigger lakes, can't wait. There's no wrong choice.

There are a few on craigslist. I have one and it's great when it works. I need to get a new motor for it. I think this will be it's 3rd motor. I guess it's not so weather proof.

Small pontoon boat is good for solo fishing on small lakes or river drifting. Get on a big lake and throw in a wife and kid or dog and you'll want that 12'er and an outboard.

Self loader for a 12 foot ? you must be old )
My old riveted Viking 14 ft is becoming a bit of a chore to throw up on the canopy , but it still gets there.

Yes its a long way to the top of the canopy..on my ford f350 with canopy..its gotta be over 7 feet to the level the boat sits..its doable..but sure nicer with boat loader...especially by ones self..
Cheers

Why wreck your back for no good reason?

I've had both. I much prefer the aluminum to the inflatable. Inflating an deflating is a pain in the butt and chasing leaks sucks.

So the $100 I got mine for was good deal. Had to do some alterations to get it on my quad deck and keep the height down.

Since you say you have a new trailer. I thought I'd show you this, the master bed can be a bit much to lift to get at the storage. More so if ya put a full size mattress or add extra padding. Put this on today, linear actuator from princess auto, takes 12 seconds to lift it. Ya don't have to be old to think theirs a better way, busting some body parts makes you look at things different too.

Had to get a new motor for my boat loader. Little pricey at 150 bucks but where else can you buy the motors. I have to get two trailers up to our other house. The only logical way was to load the boat and it's trailer up on top. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p242/edzzed/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-05/1462138479598_zpsgpgjceyl.jpg
