Hi all

I have been out looking for bears the last few days.

I found a nice area with grass, dandelions etc.. Lots of fresh bear shit.

Towards the end of the trail I was following I noticed a used tampon tied to a small tree about 2 feet of the ground.

I am guessing it must be a form of bait.

Anyone else seen this?

We use a tampon dipped in estrus to hang in a tree around the odd wallow for elk hunting.

Lol hopefully it is because the alternative sounds gross.. Just don't shoot any bears around the tampon and you should be fine .

We tried the same for moose, the one fresh scrape we saw was beside the tampon and my buddy ended up shooting that bull. One time is a small sample size but there it is.

When we use them for elk, our intention is not to expect to draw a bull in at the time we're there, just rather have them follow their nose and frequent the area. Maybe leave some sign that they are in the area. A rub, tracks in the mud. And maybe they stay close enough you can call one in.

looks like it worked for bear as there was scat around that area

I use them for black tail hunting. They are biodegradable and cheaper then the ones you buy for hunting.

If we are talking black bears, I wonder if this "attractant" falls under the illegal use of bait for hunting black bear?

I was under the impression that baiting bears was illegal

From the descriptions in the synopsis, it's fairly easy to figure out.

Tampon with attractant would be illegal because it is being placed to attract bears.

Hunting over dandelions is ok, because it is not part of an animal and has not been "placed" there

Hunting over a pile of apples placed there would be illegal

Hunting over a carcass (placed or not) is illegal because it is an animal or part of an animal and you are "using it" whether intentionally or not

They are great. You can use them when swimming and playing tennis, why not hunting?

And unlike other hunting accessories, as of July 2015, tampons are GST free.

Tampons spreading "doe pee" scent in katabatic and anabatic breezes, have been stalwarts in our hunting bag-of-tricks for years.

well soaked tampons, hung in the right places last many days before re-soak or replacement is needed.

I guess there has to be some scent that would attract black bears - Bacon fat maybe?

Pretty sure OP was in Region 2... in an area where cans of salmon and sardines with holes poked in them can be found during bear season. Could be left over from deer season though.

It is illegal to bait bears with popcorn on fly-in hunts. Reporting this! ;-P

Not sure about tampons but I work with a couple of dildos that would make good bear bait.
