Its been a couple weeks now since I shot my bear, but due to school I haden't had a chance to write up the story. So here she goes...
My hunting partner, Devon had just come back from school for his summer vacation, so we decided to do a little road trip up to Prince George for a spring bear or two. Well, im not one to turn down many hunting opportunities, so I took Friday off, and we headed up Thursday afternoon. We spent the night in 100 mile house, and with a hot timmies, we headed out first thing friday morning.
We had decided to bring the float tubes, as our third hunting partner lives in Prince George and was forced to work the friday. We dropped of our gear at his place, then pumped up the tubes, and after about a ten minute drive we were at our chosen lake. It was my first time on the water this year, and it sure felt good. As we headed out onto the water, we noticed a guy fishing in unusually shallow water, but he was sure doing well! We made our way over to investigate, and he shared his secrets, he was just leaving, thus giving up his honey hole. Out came the chironomid gear, and on our first casts we had a double header! The fishing went like this for as long as we stayed. We decided to keep a few fish and then proceded to sneek out for an evening hunt. We didnt see any bears but I did manage to get my truck stuck. Sweet! After getting it out of that hole, we decided to call it a day.
We were originally going to take the jet boat out, but it was really foggy out that morning(now saturday) so decided to drive into an area that was nicely greened up and do some hiking. We beat the bush all day but really didnt see much. There was a lot of fresh sign but the bears were outta sight. We did see a nice boar while driving along, so we decided to keep going a ways, and then come back on foot. The bear wasn't around when we came back though.
Sunday was really our last day to hunt so we were up early and we brought out the quad. We beat the bush hard, however all we encountered were sows with cubs. At about seven o clock, we were driving along when Devon spotted a bear up in a slash. We hopped out of the truck and made our way over to it. At about a hundred yards I took the shot with my new 270 wsm. The 140 grain trophy bonded bear claw did its job, as it took out both lungs before continuing on. I was super happy with the performance of my rifle, as this was the first animal I had shot at using it! We took a few pictures and then loaded the bear into the truck, as we still had some daylight.
Although we did manage to see a nice boar just before dark, it sure wasn't sticking around, and as soon as it saw the truck it was gone!
All in all, it was a wonderful trip with many great memories along the way!
