View Full Version : Grizz at last!

After 10 days of grizzly hunting over the last month I was finally able to connect Saturday night (my last day of hunting) with my buddy MooseKnuckler.

Hunted for 8 days without even a glimpse of a bear, and finally Friday night came across a great boar. Snuck up to ~80yds, but the wind wasn't in our favor. I had a shot, but not a perfect one so watched with fingers crossed hoping he'd feed into a decent position. The wind got the better of us and off he went.

Saw him again Saturday morning, and couldn't connect. Saturday evening we were heading to an area where I had seen a set of tracks a few weeks earlier, and came across this boar. While not a monster, he had a perfect coat with incredible hair and not a hint of a rub (even his armpits are fully haired), and fabulous claws!

He was quartering away at 131yds, and the 140gr TSX (280AI) went in the left rear ribs, broke the right shoulder, and kept on going. He didn't take a step...straight down.

A dying camera battery allowed for a few photos...this is the best of the bunch.

That is unbelievably cool... Really nice picture too. I guess you won't be forgetting the extra batteries on your next hunt? And WHAT did you say? 280AI? No monster magnum? I bet that hunt was worth the discipline to wait for the right shot.
Jonathan
P.S. Measure those talons!

Gorgeous bear, nice getting him before he really started digging and wearing back those claws ! Glad to see you never lost enthusiasm after not seeing a bear in 8 days !
As a friend was just saying yesterday, "The reason i have shot so many animals is I never give up hope, I keep going because, 'What might be around that corner, or over that hill' "
This proved true for you !

Awesome looking animal. I'm still undecided if I'd be willing to spend that kind of money for the trip to the mainland and then getting the rug done. It's a beautiful animal but I don't think I'd be able to sell it to my wife.

Marc;
I am in the same boat as you. What I would do maybe is apply for a moose leh in an area where you can also get a grizz leh and hope to connect on one/both.
Or head to an area for open moose further north that offers a grizz LEH, which is usually an area you may need to shoot that grizz anyways, and in turn accomplishing a meat hunt and trophy hunt in one trip?

You have to ask your wifes permission?

Great bear, Stone. Good persistance too.
Thats the thing about having only one species tag in the pocket, theres nothing else to derail the effort.

Of course the claws look big !! They are the closest part to the camera. Perspective.

Make it part of a moose hunting trip - you can hunt grizz in the fall too!

Justify it by bringing back a year supply of meat.

I gotta say you grizzly hunters got more guts then I got to go into griz areas up against one of those monsters, you must have brass -----, or eat lots of ant-acids. good luck and nice pix.
