View Full Version : 7x57, 270 or 300 WM for black bear?

I have five different choices what to hunt black bear with:

270 shooting Federal Blue box ammo with 130 grain Speer Grand slams

270 with 150 grain Hornady Interlocks

7x57 shooting 139 grain Hornady Interlocks

280 shooting 140 grain Federal Fusion bullets

300 Winchester with Winchester Super X factory 180 grain bullets

Is one better than the other?

I know from experience that my 7x57 and 300 kill bears.

I've never shot a bear with my 270 rifles yet.

Full disclosure: My favourite 270 rifle to carry is the one that shoots the 130 grain bullets.

But I like my 280 a lot too.

Shoot one with each! They will all kill bears, I'd pick the 150 for the 270 other than that I wouldn't hesitate to use any of those.

270, 280 and the 7x57 should be sold and a 7-08 bought. That would make the choice easier.....

Blackbear hide is actually very thin.

my wife is gonna use my 25-06ai to shoot her bear this year...I'm not worried.

The black bears I've shot died just as quick with a 95 grain bullet out of a .243 as they did with 180 grains out of a 30-06. Walk up to the gun cabinet backwards and do some eenie meenie miney moe. You've got a damn good problem to have if you ask me

X2 why are you limited to those ammo selections? Get a quality bullet you won't regret it

Buddy gave me the Husvqvarna model 4100 270 with 200 rounds of that federal ammo with the Grand slam bullets. The rifle shoots them accurately too.

Re. the 300, I reloaded for some years with a good handload recipe at a buddy's (I don't reload myself) and yeah, it killed lots of things and then one day I got a box of the Winchester Super X ammo and it clover leafed at 200 metres, so I didn't want to change anything.

As the majority of people have stated, they will all work. Go with what you shoot the best. Personally, for bears, I usually tend to gravitate towards larger calibers - my .338 Win Mag... (that is on the odd year when I don't shoot them with my bow)

I used a 270 with 130 gr SPs on my first bear. DRT. But a softball size hole in the rug on the back side. 150 yards or so. My second I used a 6.5 creedmoor because I had it in the truck. Ran 30 yards but didn't smash up the hide as bad.

The answer to your question is: 'no'.
