I am trying to figure out what the moose population is for BC-are the numbers increasing or decreasing? The number of hunters according to statistics are way down from 20-30 years ago,so if hunting is a main source of moose mortality-then decreasing the number of hunters should given all else equal, should result in higher moose populations. We have had LEH and immature bull open seasons for a number of years now ,which theoretically should increase the moose herd.Fires and pine beetle kill should have resulted in a large increase of browse-so, has all this resulted in higher moose populations? If the herd is increasing-we should be seeing a higher allowable LEH.
Any thoughts,opinions or better-facts?

I do have an old mag laying around from 2004, and according to the stats Bull/cow ratios play a big part in the stability of the moose pop as well. Northern parts had 70 bulls for 100 cows and areas a little south of that 38 bulls 40 calves to 100 cows. Also tick infestation can cause major problamos, Jel the best success ratio for hunter success for moose near to me are 3:19, 3:30 and 5:1 according to stats in BC

I would say that the moose population is up in most parts of BC ,but like i said on another post ,once they put a species on LEH ,they never take it back off LEH.http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif

So many ways to try and get hunters involved like Tri palm, or nine point plus youth special moose calf and on and on who could manage all of that on a spring heli count anyway too big of job for one person I would think. Moose are where you find them, hopefully close to the side of a hunting road. Unless you got pack horses eh'
