What a majestic & intelligent bird.
Story-A while back returned to our regular hunting camp near Gang. Unbelievably the wood pile was still intact from the year before. Had it covered by a couple of old blankets & some plastic. Upon lifting the blanket there was a squirrel lying in its nest. The loud, penetrating scream of the squirrel’s escape scared both Eve & I.Within a second or two 2 grey owls appeared out of nowhere & instantly went for the squirrel.
BTW Grey Owl wrote some good books!

Good story i had a Grey owl flying straight at me down one of the cart tracks in the Gang was not sure he would veer off.Another time i was in a tree stand in Cranbrook and one was flying low through the forest and he flew up and sat on a limb on the tree opposite me.He stayed for a good 20 minutes then just fell off the limb and glided through the forest about 3 feet off the ground.Owls are my favorite bird.

Yes, those pictures turned out great considering how you took them. Thanks for posting.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that's enjoyed seeing them up behind the Gang. Seems a
good place for them to thrive because I see them nearly every time I'm in the area.

I have one hanging on my wall. It was a road kill on the Connector. Picked it up, took it in to the COs, got a permit and now it has a nice warm home. They are beautiful birds.

Just love the sound of the GGO hooting and/or the wolves howling while sitting by the evening/late night campfire imbibing in my favourite. You know you’re back in the wilderness.
There has to be a reason for the old saying “wise as an owl”.
They can twist their heads almost a full circle.
Great Grey Owl Strixnebulosa Size: 60–82 cm (24″–33″), Wingspan to 1.3 m (52″), Weight 1,080 gr(2.4 lbs) Nest: Yukon, Northwest Territories and British Columbia to Ontario
· Canada’s largest owl, and look much heavier than they are
· Very fluffy with a long tail and large head with yellow eyes, no ear tufts
· Plumage is grey with dark, smudgy markings; black chin spot bordered by white patches like a bow tie
· Large, heavily ringed facial disc makes the eyes look small
· Smaller eyes than most are an adaptation to diurnal hunting
· Voice is a series of up to 10 deep, muffled hoots
· Hunt for small mammals at night, or at dusk and dawn and can be active during the day
· Do not build nests but will enlarge an old one
· Lay 2 to 5 white eggs in a bulky stick nest located in dense conifers
· Do not migrate, but will irrupt into hunting areas with high rodent population cycles
· A very secretive bird, discovered by Europeans in America before they realized it also lives in Europe
· Provincial bird of Manitoba

The Cornell lab is a great site for birds. I find myself using it when I'm trying to identify birds.

There was a roadkill one last weekend by Lone Butte. Looked too smeared to pick up, but was easily recognizable.

Owls are awesome, love seeing them! There was a saw-whet owl that lived in my buddies cedar tree who used to dive bomb our duck decoys when we hunted out in his back 40.

I have one of those as well. It committed hari-kari into the grill of my car early one morning. It has a perch on the wall not too far from my Great Grey. I have 3 or 4 different hawks that come to visit quite often. Truly beautiful birds. It's a pleasure to watch them.
