I went out for an evening hunt, region two, and took my girlfriend with me. We glassed some slides and old roads seeing 5 different bears but notheing of any size. On the way home we decided to check one more area which was an old logging slash. At the end of the road I saw this guys head looking over the hill at us. He left the slash on an old skidder road. I followed him in and found that he must have been using the road for a couple of years because you could see where he placed his feet in the same tracks each time. I rounded a corner and there he stood at 70 yards. I shot him once through the lungs and he ran maybe 60-80 yards before dying. He squares at 7' right on the button. I couldn't believe that and I didn't think he was that big when i shot him. His skull measures 19 3/8". This is the first time that I have hunted with a gun rather than my recurve all season and I felt a little guilty but I don't think i would have got him if I had the old stick and string.

Great Bear, Congrats 8)

Squaring the hide is simply the width "paw to paw" added to the length "nose to tail" then divide by 2.
FWIW........many bears are pretty close in these "width" and "length" measurements.

I'd guess to square at 7' he musta been at least a 6'8" bear give or take...kinda depends on the length of his arms though

that's right he was 6'8"Nose to tail. Unfortunately he was a little rubbed in the back end but overall a fairly nice hide. I am going to try and tan it myself if I can find the time.

Sounds Great..........I've had fleshed out bear hides in the freezer for up to 2 years before I had them tanned........no salt, seal up good and they keep for a long time:grin:

Thanks, that's good to know. I think we still have some deer hides in the freezer from when my Dad started hunting!

I'm thinking the same... My dink 6 footer fell into a ditch and there was no way in convincing him back to the road.

Thank God for cheap Costco winches.

there would be no way two of us could drag the bear out, I had enough trouble rolling him around for pictures. We (I) skinned and boned him and then carried the stuff back to the road.
