I would have to say that this trip was the most memerable to date. From building rock ramps to cross streams and washouts, winching boulders to Dave's outstanding deer sloppy joe's for dinner. Not to mention turning my ATV upside down with a bear strapped to it as we headed down a nasty slide. We found honey hole heaven for future hunts and left plenty of area to continue to explore. Lots of great memories and pics to back them up for future reminders of the trip. The meat is at the butcher and the hides are in the freezer. We are looking forward to the next hunt already and have already compiled a list of items to make the next hunt even better. I will spend the next few days recovering from the 25 hour marathon of dragging, skinning, packing, moving boulders and whatever else causes muscle fatigue and back pain while hunting. All in all a fantastic trip.

We passed by there but didn't see much except severe washouts. Spent most of the day on the other side of the highway and the rest is history.

Hey Chris,
Nice meeting you up there. We actually had the two already when we met you that morning but mine was up in the bush still packed in snow. We had too much bear on the ATVs to pack them both out. Keep pounding those lower cuts.

The measurement for my little blackie was 4' 7" from the base of the skull to the tail. Not huge by any means but plenty of enough work for the trip with two down and great for my first bear. I won't venture a guess at the weight but it was plenty heavy.

After relying on others to post my pictures, I finally 5 days later figured out how easy it is and got it done right. Upload to gallery, then open gallery shot up to large view and copy, then paste into message area. Hope that helps other technically challenged folks like me

The meat came back from the butcher today. DH and I swilled a bear while knawing on a few chunks of jerky. It tasted great but was a little greasey. I decided to keep a spare piece of it in my glove box to grease up my door hinges when they squeak:-D. When my kids came home from school I handed out pieces of pepperoni to them and they loved it as did my wife and I. The day would not have been complete without trying the smokies on the BBQ. They too were fantastic and a big hit to say the least. The final word came from my wife who said "I like bear better than deer, you can keep chasing them around the bush with your gun". So there you have it, our first bears and a total success so far. A few more varieties of bear meat still to try but I'm sure they too will be great.

They are good eats fer sure. Haven't heard of a bad one yet this spring. Maybe this is a good time of the year to take one because they are all grazing?

You guys save any steaks? If not, you don't know what you're missing!

Mine are all gone... Sorry.

No expert here, but I had some really tough (chewy) cuts of meat left over from my first bear. So here's something to help with toughness if that's your concern.

I ended up marinating the meat overnight in a tomatoe base. Apparently the natural acids in the tomatoe tenderize the meat over time. Flavor was good too.

I was given this tip by a Ukranian Grandma who'd spent decades preparing her husband's game.

I treated mine as any ole steak. Mainated in italian salad dressing (4-5 hrs) then toss on barbi.

Simple.

I have come to the conclusion why i don't like eating bear meat. One of the reason being is when you skin it ,it looks so much like a human.http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif

I maybe in the minority, but I like it AS IS, to cover it in some commercial taste changer would defeat the reason we hunt game :wink:

I didn't see/notice that. Way to big in the body for it to resemble a human.

I agree. That's why I don't like marinating in salad dressings too long. I find that the vinegars stay in the meat while cooking, and the taste is really altered.

The tomatoes are a good compromise I think. I haven't found that they wash away any of the meat taste. Just tastes a little more italian :-D

Them steaks that I did up was the first ever bear meat that I've tried, that wasn't sausaged or cured into hams.

knowing what I do NOW, feel free to serve me one up in ANY fashion that you know off.

The true test of the bear meat was performed this weekend while out hunting for another bear. Direct Hit and I BBQed up some bear steaks for ourselves and and a few other hunting buddies. IT WAS GREAT!!! I could have sworn it was tenderloin. Not srtingy or overly greasy. No gamey taste at all. All members of the group enjoyed it.

I had it again tonight to celebrate my son's 6th B-Day. Even the mother in law liked it. I like it better than deer and I love deer. I guess I'll be dropping another one in the fall. For all of you out there who like to eat what you shoot and have not shot a bear because you were not sure of the taste let me assure you it is worth the work.

I agree with phil.I like it in pepperoni or just cut into roasts.I ate my last bear roast just the other night used some beef broth in the bottom of the pan and covered it with onions and garlic and cooked it in the oven.Seeing how i didn't shoot one this spring i'm going to shoot two in the fall.

Most people are surprised with the taste once you get past the thought. My wife also prefers Bear over late season deer or a big bull. they don't have the game taste nearly as much. i wouldn't worry about trying to get rid of the game taste, just do to them as you would do to a steak and you'll be happy. a rut deer, duck or big old bull is a different story. Also, for the roasts i usually use the slow cooker because dinner is done when we get home. one roast, 4 potatoes cut in half, 1/2 cup red wine, 1/2 cup water/broth. put this all in the pot then sprinkle everything with french onion soup mix and a little pepper. when you come home and supper is done you won't believe it. Almost as easy as meals on wheels. BTW, i have tested my friends on all three meats, deer/moose/bear all cooked in the same pot/pan and the bear always wins the vote. but to everyone that is too freeked out to eat them, no worries, more for us. and a tip for an old moose or rut buck is to have your butcher keep the bone off. the bone for some reason adds a lot of the "gamey" taste.

The final chapter of the "Two Boars Down" post has finally arrived home tonight. It is not too often a couple of hunting buddies can score two nice bears on the same trip let alone the same day, which is one of the reasons having these bears mounted meant so much to us. Dave and I are both extremely pleased with the work done by Ray at Heads Above and can't wait to show off these trophies to friends and family. Here are a few pictures of my spring bear.
