I thought the same thing last year about bears waking up early. I started looking around in March, checking our early season bear spots and hanging trailcams for deer. We started seeing a little bit of sign after the 2nd week of April, but nothing significant until the first week of May. The ticks were just brutal though.
This year I'm just going to keep hitting the local lakes for fishing until the last week of April at which point we'll check out spots for sign, halfass hunting while deciding which spot to focus on. We'll start getting serious the first weekend of May and then extra serious for the next couple weeks after that.
IMHO the warm weather in the LML last year didn't seem to make a lick of difference... there was a lot of grass, dandelions and skunk cabbage to be had, but very few bears out. After the first week of May, it was hard not to step in bear crap.
Of course if I start seeing reports of bears down everywhere at the beginning of April, I'll certainly reconsider!!! :D

Yea always can be a bit finicky but that being said normally the dandelion and skunk cabbage brings them running

Saw a bear January 1st this year. Young little girl right at sea level probably wait for the tide to go out. There was a few inches of snow but nothing serious

Ya my back yard come and get as many as you want as their going to my neighbour's compost pile's. I'v had fresh bear crap in my front yard between Xmas and new years one year and almost stepped in some in back yard at the begining of March one year. Their not true hibernators, they can get up and poke around when it warms up but don't really get going until there's lots of green stuff to eat.
