I have a 10' spratley and despite tons of searching all over, can't find any input on what size of outboard to put on it (rated to 9.9)
I've been to the shops, will likely go with a Yamaha, 4/6hp weigh the same (60lbs or so) and 8/9.9hp is the same as well (90ish)
I'm 235lbs and it will mostly be me alone or my son along (6 and around 55lbs already)
Stern weight will obviously be an issue so I think 6hp will be sufficient but would really like to hear some feedback before purchasing. Thanks

I just bought a 9.9 for mine but haven't had the opportunity to try it out. I bought it to do double duty on a 14ft boat when taking the family to hp rated lakes. If it means anything, look closely at the photo on their website and you'll see the owner cruising around with a 15 on the stern! It takes a lot to make a wide, flat boat sit deeper in the water.

I believe that 15 is on the 12' model but good point, I should probably hold off until I can get some definite feed back. I've searched every freshwater forum I can find to no avail

I think it would go pretty damn fast with an 8hp on it. Perfect too with the kid along but by yourself that would fly.

I had the 10 ft wide model, me the wife and a 8 hp worked really well, I also had a 6 hp that was a little lighter and i prefered that with the tank on the motor just for space savings.... it wasnt a race boat but got me to all the spots on the lakes i fished.

10’ Spratley weight capacity 425 lbs
less 9.9 outboard 90 lbs
325 lbs
less your weight 235 lbs
100 lbs
less son’s weight 55 lbs
leaves this for tackle, fuel, etc. 45 lbs

I have a 10' and used my dads 2 stroke Yamaha for a cple years and loved that motor. But he always uses the motor so I got a 6 and I don't like it! 6 is barely enough to get it up on plane and Iam only 140lbs. If your looking to get around quicker minimum 8!

Getting that boat up on plane with the weight you're talking about in the boat will really be touch and go even with an 8 hp, especially if it's a 4 stroke motor. I've got a similar boat (10' welded, same basic width (44" on the bottom) and weight as a wide Spratley and it gets up on plane with my older two stroke Mariner 9.9 quite well but wouldn't with two guys in the boat with my 8 hp Merc. We weighed about 165 lbs. each.

If getting it up on plane isn't an issue for you and you just want a gas trolling motor, then a 4-6 hp motor will be fine until you have to come back against the wind on a big lake. Then you may be hooped!

Sounds like 9.9 is the answer, thanks for all the input.

One thing I would mention that I think is imperative. Make sure that it has F-N-R. Rotating the motor for reverse travel does not appeal to me and I consider it a risk.

A 9.9 will be much smoother with less vibration and rattle than a single cylinder 6hp or less. I'd definitely get a two cylinder engine if you plan to ever troll with it.

I bring along a couple Costco laundry soap buckets with a rock in the bottom to prevent them
from flipping out on the highway.
Then I fill them up, snap the lids on and leave them up front for weight when fishing by myself.
Helps too if it's windy out. Keeps the bow down slightly and less area for the wind to push me around.
If you think I'm kidding, you only need to try it out.
My buddies go to shore and load rocks............................dipchits.......:m rgreen:

I would go with the 9.9 too. You'll find if you ever get a 12 or 14 ft. boat then you have the motor for it. My 12 ft. Princecraft Ungava will do 34 kmh with just me and fuel. It's a Yamaha 9.9 2 stroke.

I have a 12' Spratley with a 9.9 on it. Across a open lake I could use more.

If you go 9.9 or 8, I would recommend putting a fin on the leg to help you plane better. A 10' spratley isn't very long for that much horse power and your bow will most likely be pointing skyward when you open it up. Good luck.

am I the only one thinking I would put a small 15hp on it?..

If you're planning on trolling with anything larger than 5hp, you better have a couple of buckets to drag for speed control because there is no way that you can get the speed down otherwise. Get yourself a 55# thrust electric and a large deep cycle battery. Top that of with a little solar panel to offset some of the power drain.
