Hey guys, was watching some tv and saw someone using one. Figured it might be nice to have in the backpack/truck. Was wondering if any of you guys have personal experience with one? Found this site that does tests as well

Any info guys? Thanks!

I have a couple of different ones. Once cheap one from PA and another "name brand" one. They work equally well. They need to be oiled regularly. I have cut limbs off some trees around the house by tying long ropes to either end of the saw and tossing one end over the limb and using the saw from the ground. No ladders+no heights=much safer operation.

Handy item to have.

Found the little rope saw totally useless. Threw it out and bought a Silky saw.

Rope saws are not practical. They break and you spend a lot of energy for little wood.
I'd rather have a stiff knife and use it to baton wood.
It's very easy to make a buck saw from a couple of pieces of 1x2 and 2x2 and some rope.
Spend 5 bucks on a blade and you are good to go.
Folding saws are good too.
There are good quality, durable saws like Bob Dustrude buck saw, Boreal saws http://agawacanyoninc.com/
I find that a small axe 19" or less or a hatchet is your best friend north of the 49th.
These rope saws are gimmicks.

I have a small rope saw for my day pack. I carry a swede saw in my regular pack as well
as a small axe. The rope saw works, but there's a bit of a trick to it in applying the right
amount of pressure and it's only meant for emergencies.

Understanable. Thanks for the info guys! I was thinking about getting the rope saw that had more of the chainsaw chain instead of the wire cable style. And it would be more of an emergency situation type thing, or long over night hiking trips, to keep the bag lighter vs. Bringing a saw. Thanks guys !

Silky saw is always in my pack. Small and compact. Cut down a small tree, firewood for a small fire, and open up a rib cage or cut through leg bone. Best backpack saw out there IMO

I have the one with the red handle . Has a chainsaw type blade . Its light and good as an emergency saw . One guy on each end really shows what it can do . In a pinch its great . Takes up little space in the pack and light weight .
