Question : What do you find to be the best all around radio for use in your hunting and fishing adventures ?
Looking for something that is compact and has decent range.
Needs to be waterproof for use on the salt water.

Hand held marine radios are great.in case you don't know from what I remember is one watt is worth a mile of range.

Used an Icom for years. Good range and no problems. Have read that the radio portion of the Garmin Rinos is not that great. May be because they are trying to put two kinds of systems into one unit which is the same size as GPS's and radios on their own. No personal experience and I'm sure you will find Rino users that would dispute that (Bear Brawler). Just thought I'd throw it out there as I have read about it. If you lose a Rino or the battery dies, both systems are gone. I rather not have that possibility. Lots of info to research online.

i bought a beofeng uv-5r

I bought one too but unfortunately not water proof. Better range than most handhelds with the extended antenna.

Been using icon for everything from truck to aircraft and haven't had a problem yet.

My Icon built in radio for my 4x4 has worked great never had a problem with it in 6 years I have asked loggers that I talked to on the FSR
how clear I am at a 22k distance they said you sound like your right beside me..

This is good feed back I would recommend buying there product nothing but good to say regarding Icom radios built in or hand held...

Canadian versions of gmrs radios 2 W, but in the states, some are 5W....but...you didn't hear that from me...
just stating a fact.
I will find out the brand of vhf my friend bought from the states.
He got 2 for real cheap, and so far he likes em.
7W, but again, use at you own risk...but the work great.
He has the option, although very hard to figure out, to use a certain vhf #'s to work in receiving other's on certain gmrs channels.

Icom 2200H VHF mounted in my truck. Newer model Icom 2300H can be had for about $215 here in Canada or Pre-modded for a little more out of the states. A couple of Puxing PX-777 VHF 136-174 handhelds that have been great over the years. About $50 bucks out of Hongkong
