Some where I read that CT in North Van was asking for your PAL and writing it down in a binder which is not required by law. Well on the other end of the scale I bought some bricks of 22's at CT in Squamish and not one of the three sales guys ask me for my PAL. That night I told the wife and she said that she bought ammo there before when she ran out at the range and no one asked her either.:confused: Not used to this locked up ammo s*#t in the store:???:. Used to picking ammo off the shelf. Oh well at least I can still get it. Just have to buy more at a time and store it. Nuff said.

I buy ammo at the CT in North Van all the time I've never seen them write my number down.

If they do they just started.

The first and last time I bought ammo for my 308 and 22 mag at CDN Tire in north van I had to show my PAL and then they carried the boxes to the counter for me .

When i went in to CT in North Van the "kid" pulled out the white binder from the locked ammo case He wanted to copy my pal # and my name into the book, as i was looking at the list of names in the book, I'm thinking this guy is not getting my info. i asked why he needed all that personal information and he said "i don't know" then i asked how long does my information stay in that white binder and he said "i don't know". After getting no answers i told him i will get my ammo for my rocket launcher somewhere else.

I'm thinking of making up my own form for them to sign. It will read as follows.
Canadian Tire agrees to replace all of your guns and ammo when you get robbed because we have a dumb ass policy in place that puts our customers and the safety of the general public at risk. We don't know why we have this dumb ass policy at some of our stores and not at other stores,but I'm sure we have a good reason.that
will make absolutely no sense to you.

I can't handle CDN tire. After having to be escorted like a child to the checkout till with my brick of .22's, I vowed to never buy from them again.
I prefer to buy my ammo at my local run store.

Under BC's PIPA (Personal Information Protection Act) and Canada's PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act), Crappy Tire must provide you with a copy of their privacy policy, and must be able to explain why they are collecting the information, how long it will be retained, how it will be stored, and to what uses it will be put. They also must serve you, even if you tell them to pound sand, if they can't prove the information is essential to the transaction. If they can't/don't or refuse to, they are in contravention of PIPEDA.

Here are your PIPEDA rights as an individual consumer...note the one I have bolded below:

The law gives individuals the right to

know why an organization collects, uses or discloses their personal information;
expect an organization to collect, use or disclose their personal information reasonably and appropriately, and not use the information for any purpose other than that to which they have consented;
know who in the organization is responsible for protecting their personal information;
expect an organization to protect their personal information by taking appropriate security measures;
expect the personal information an organization holds about them to be accurate, complete and up-to-date;
obtain access to their personal information and ask for corrections if necessary; and
complain about how an organization handles their personal information if they feel their privacy rights have not been respected.The law requires organizations to

obtain consent when they collect, use or disclose their personal information;
supply an individual with a product or a service even if they refuse consent for the collection, use or disclosure of their personal information unless that information is essential to the transaction;
collect information by fair and lawful means; and
have personal information policies that are clear, understandable and readily available.

Come to think about it, I got to carry my own ammo to the front my self, the guys stayed behind BSing. I asked the wife she said she carried hers as well. It seems that every store is different, go figure.:???:

unless that information is essential to the transaction
They could argue that a PAL is required for the transaction and this is a way for them (store owners) to verify that this information is checked prior to an ammo sale. The recording of personal info for ammo sales is the law in Ont.

And I bet that is exactly what they will argue, that it is required. Note that I just posted what people's rights are, I didn't actually give an opinion as to whether CT are following the Acts...so here's my opinion: They are just trying to cover their asses under the Firearms Act, but I think they are lax in how they are safeguarding people's personal information, if these lists are left lying around the sports counter as a previous poster mentioned. Having been a corporate Privacy Officer, I know that the Privacy Commission would likely just tell them to smarten up if someone decided to challenge them on it...the law has very little for teeth when it comes to procedural matters. If Crappy Tire were to sell your info to someone else without your consent, then there would likely be penalties and fines. The acid test is usually based on an organization "profiting" from misusing your personal information as to whether the Commission fines them.

I'll still buy my ammo at the local sports shops because I just can't suffer the process at Crappy Tire. Besides, for $5 worth of 22 shells, I get at least a half hour of great bullshit from the boys at our small local shops.

Yes but to save 50 cents on that brick of 22 shells alot would rather get at least a half hour of standing in the checkout waiting for Mrs Kirbockle to explain why they should take back her weedeater without a reciept........or my favourite, the item without a price on it :roll:

CT half the time doesn't even check my PAL. Other half, they do, but do not write anything down, and have ALWAYS had to be walked to the front of the store by some lackey who probably can't even legally handle ammunition. I find during hunting season, if I go in wearing my camo, they never check me....go figure.

I was with a buddy who did buy some ammo there once, and they put it in one of those green "tuff bags" for him to carry to the front of the store. Yup, that would keep any whacko from finding an exacto in the store and slicing the bag open to get at the ammo. :roll:

It`s funny they don`t have a guy to carry your liquor for you at the grog shop ,being as boose is a lot more dangerous than bullets,you could duck into a side isle and pound a mickey of rum then go back for one to purchase,kinda like eating grapes in a grocery store(but more fun)
I buy shells at my local sporting store in Cranbrook,support the little guy and they have known me for years.Cuts down on the bullshit too.

Maybe my letter of complaint worked with the manager. I wrote and said it is not required to write down PAL info, and I would be telling other shooters to avoid CT i Squamish if they continued this practice.

I was wondering why Squamish CT was so much more relaxed about buying ammo than North Van CT. Good on yahh Gatehouse!!

I got fed up of waiting and having to go through that huge process of them righting down my info and walking me through the store. I don't want to be followed through the store buy some kid while I'm looking at tools and stuff.
I don't have a probleme with the guys asking to see my PAL, keeps the punk Sh*t H**ds from buying ammo and blowing stuff up at 23 mile!! It's just abit much to be recording where I live and such.

Interesting. I too, went to CT to buy my ammo and the 14 year old that was at the counter had about 5 of his closest baggy-assed friends hanging out with him. He says (in his toughest "would you like fries with that" voice) "You got your FAC on ya??" I said "No, but I have my PAL". He never did write anything down, but put the ammo in one of the green bags with a lock on it. I do prefer to go to the smaller stores. More $$ but worth the chatter.
