Sorry to hear. My GSP is coming up to 16 in June. She sleeps lots. Runs very little. It will be very sad when she goes. But both yours and my dogs have lived a full and great life.

I feel for you man. We had to put our 13 yr. old dog down this past May.

You will always remember the good times and have a smile inside.

12 years is pretty damned good for any retriever, My Golden has given me 11 seasons and is still going well but who knows what next year will bring. Good for you on the Recovery I have my old gal on it, it works. Well deserved retirement coming but they just don't understand that.

As they say, life's not fair, and it's especially true for dogs. We build up a wonderful bond and mutual
trust only for it to be taken away so soon. Hope your choc enjoys his remaining days of retirement.

Chase just turned 12 . he is doing the same thing.
its a hard thing to do. He was going good and then went south. You just gotta remember, if that picture is any indication of what your dog gave you, he is living a great life!

Hey Mike sorry to hear about that......tough to find companions like a Lab, a new pup and a new Weatherby  should help brighten your day
Either way lots of great memories with the old boy.

Puppy breath is great medicine, and I bet the old guy still has something left to teach the "Kid" and it will give him purpose. I have my Old Girls granddaughter and she is learning a lot off Granny.

my old boy is 13 and now his job is when we set the decoys he just goes around and pee,s on stuff. he seems quite content to get back in the truck and wait for us to finish. I fear the day when they let me out of the truck to pee on stuff.

It will be OK if you have a nice warm dry crate back at the truck LOL.

It's a sad day when you realize it's time to retire them. Think about it if your dog is 13 it's like asking a 90 year old man to go out and retrieve your ducks. You can understand why they don't want to do it any more it's because they can't. Just before New Years I had to put down my old BL boy, would have been 12 in Feb. but this last Oct. he hunted wild Pheasants in Alberta quite well be it maybe only an hour to two hours at a time and he loved doing it. He wasn't much of a duck dog but Pheasants was his game, if he got their scent they were in trouble if I could keep up to him. I'm going to miss watching him hunt them up. You could say this last Oct. was his last Hurrah.

Only a dogman can know your pain but also the joy of a new partner. I lost my Grand Old Lady last summer after 13 awesome seasons, it was fortunate in one way that I never had to see the hurt in her eyes when I had to leave her home. They never truly leave us, remember the good ties and know that for hunters and their partners there is no "Rainbow Bridge" only fields, marshes and woods where the game is thick and the season never ends.
