Well didn't get out on the first.... kind of a write off... But I did make a solo trip out on the 2nd. Couldn't seem to round anyone up to sit out on the ice at -23... well that's what in town said. Out on the lake, the air kind of stung the nostrils.

I headed out to "Dugan" tried fishing a couple other spots. Seemed the original spot that Jake had the hot hole with was productive around 10:00am-11:00am. I had some fish (ok sized, 24 inches or so) chewing on my bait, but couldn't get them to hook up. I guess you take the risk when you're fishing 1/0 hooks and whole prawns.

Sleds pack down trails and make it easier for others to drive in and powered augers are heavy and noisy.

We got out onto the ice around 9am. Second time ever being in a vehicle on ice. Not a fan at all. We didn't drive out far and the ice was 2 feet thick.

We got our holes drilled. They were using tip ups a funky contraptions. I showed them the partial second hole rod holder trick. They thought that was "neat". I also showed them how to tie herring rigs to hold their bait on more securely.

Tip ups were popping and rod tips were bending right away.

We had six long line releases before my buddy Jessy was able to hang onto one and get one onto the ice. We had one more tip up pop but couldn't hang on.

That's Battle lake. Suppose to have walleye, pike and burbot

01-26-2016, 10:22 PM
How deep you fishing? What kind of bottom? When I lived on the prairie's I fished for walleye, pike, perch & burbot a lot. Summer & winter. Don't be shy about asking for idea's by PM as I fished freshwater for 40+ years.

warnniklz
01-26-2016, 11:56 PM
Fishing deeper than I like. I'm more of a 3-7 feet kind of guy. I'm also not a ditch fisherman. So that doesn't help.

Not sure what the bottom was like. Water was pretty murky. But talking to another guy on the ice (later in the day), we were just off a shelf. I guess we were supposed to be another 50 yards to the south where there was a point. The guy fishing there was running back and forth between his tip-ups.

My personal opinion is Alnerta has the worst fishing in Canada... even with the Ram, Red Deer and Bow. They also seem to have some good grayling fishing.

Ice must be around 2 feet thick by now I'm guessing, altho the weather has been on the warm side this winter. I spend more time on the Ab site than I do over here and Seems to me there are a lot of fishermen over there. I caught quite a few walleye last summer a couple of provinces east of there. Years ago, I fished a couple of times at Long Lake, south of Boyle and I thought it was pretty lousy. LOL. I would think if you can summer fish Battle Lake with a boat and a depth finder, find the rocky points, sunken islands, narrows if any, bottom composition and depth's will greatly improve your catching. If that's not possible, ask other fishermen, not on a public forum but in person, eventually you'll run across someone willing to share. Is it possible to get a depth map of that lake? I've fished and caught a lot of your target species is 8-13 feet of water, not including ice depth. I can under stand going shallow as evening approaches but not during the day. Are you using bait, jigging, tip-ups? Are you useing a leader when fishing for walleye & perch?

My buddy lives in Camrose, so I'll let him put in the time to figure it out. That way if he comes back to BC, I'll show him the hot spots for trout.

I was running just my good old berkley cherry ice combo with 8lb vanish... hence the reason I lost the one fish I had on. I was jigging smelt tied up in an anchovy rig. Had the smelt head face down to make it look like it was feeding off the bottom. My buddy kyle had a wind activated jigging tip up, there wasn't that much wind. But mostly running static pike rigs with shiners and/or smelts. I tried my tried and true raw prawns as bait... didn't work...

If your fishing for pike with smelts, 8 lb test is like thread to them guy's.

the pike are not much of a fight through the ice in my experience...a heaver test leader-line is all you would generally need for their sharp teeth IMO

I looked at a map of Battle Lake today and I see several interesting feature's that I sure would be checking out. What part of the lake were you's fishing at? North, South or center thereabouts? I was thinking of sending you some jigs that I made several years ago to try out as I find them to be very biteable by walleye but no point if your not gonna use them.

warnniklz
01-27-2016, 07:02 PM
If you start at the eastern end of the lake, then head west along the southern shore. You'll see what looks like what I believe to be a delta in a shark tooth shape. Come off the point and go directly north across the lake. Should see a smaller point along the north shore. The west side of the point is weedy. We were out from that cove.

Thanks for the offer on the jigs. I won't get that far again this winter. But I do have a buddy that's been hounding me to make a trip to fish brown trout around Hinton. If work puts me around the valemount/mcbride area one more time for the winter.... I may just make that trip.

What depth are you fishing at? Can you see bottom? Over east where I been doing all my fishing, on some trout water's one can see bottom at 20-25 feet. A couple of the lakes are around 200 ft deep. Most are about 30 ft max.

warnniklz
01-31-2016, 04:22 PM
Yeah it's a pretty shallow lake. 20-25 feet is the deepest point. I usually drag nymphs and cronimids on a 20ft leader. Doesn't take much to spook them.

We had to resort to other tactics to get through the ice. I had to open up an existing hole in a lousy spot, but pickins wasn't the best. I didn't touch anything all day. While my brother hijacked a muskrat hole in our sweet spot. He was into a dozen, but nothing worth killing... that being said he did come face to face with a muskrat.

"Dougan" code for one of the lakes past the Wood's old cabin... 9km off the main road (3km past "dewar").

Two large surface area, yet shallow lakes. "Dewar" had a plane crash on the ice in the early to mid 90s.
