So this is the story of my first goat hunt and first ever mountain hunt. I'm going to try to do the play by play with pics so bear with me as I havnt had much luck with that in the past.

So this hunt starts in august when me and my hunting parter kyle decided to start scouting my area. We had done alot of research and got some great advice from some hbc members and it was finally time to get Into the mountains. We hit the road early and arrived at the fsr around 9am. As soon as we started our drive in we could instantly see rocky peaks and crags that looked like prime goat country. We couldn't help but stop and glass along the way. A short hour later we were parking the truck and gearing up for the big hike. Il say this, the view from where we parked was worth the price of admission alone.

Surprisingly it didn't take long to break the tree line and start navigating our way through the sub alpine.

After a couple hours we reached the alpine and words could not describe the smile on my face. To finally be in the hills in search of a big billy was just a dream for so long and now it was reality. We hurried our way up to a good spot to glass the surrounding peaks and set up shop for an hour or so.
I forgot to mention earlier we have another partner on this trip. Kyles new pup Vito who is quite the mountain dog and also quite the character.

To our surprise there was not a goat in site... Every peak looked as though it was perfect goat habitat and it was hard to believe with a 360 degree view of mountain tops there was not one in sight. However it was almost mid day now and we weren't going to let this deter us.
We started hiking down a draw parallel to a massive ridge we would soon name the beast. We were trying to follow a trail described to us by an hbc member to where he had spotted goats in previous years. It looked like we needed to hike down the draw and then up the far end of the beast. On our way down we had the bright idea that in order to save time it might be easier to just hike straight up the beast from where we are rather than hike all the way down to one end then up. After all it should look the same from the top right? We decide to go for it..

Before we started our ascent kyle looked at me and said, "what do you figure, about 40 minutes to the top?". 20 minutes later and probably 50 ft up the mountain side I started doubting if this was the right decision. Just tackling the bottom shale slide was hard enough not to mention the enormous swarms of black flies. I seriously have never seen bugs like that. So this is where I received my first lesson in mountain hunting.. Just because you think you can see the top from the bottom doesn't actually mean that is in fact the top. As we come to the peak my heart skips a best as I realize its only a curve of the mountain side and we are maybe half way to the top. While I guess we're committed now so on we go with the 5 step and stop pace. I knew this hunt would be the hardest hunt of my life this far and i wasn't going to let anything stop me from giving it the best chance possible. Even if I didn't get a goat I would have no regrets.

The feeling when we reached the peak was unbelievable for two reasons. Starring down the opposite side I was in awe of the valley filled with alpine lakes leading up to massive rock faces. The problem was it was not the valley we were looking for.. lesson 2 of mountain hunting. Before you climb a massive mountain make SURE it's the right one! None the less it was spectacular and a great spot to glass so up go the scopes.

Glassing session two produced no goats again. By this time it's around 2 or 3 pm and we only have the day to be up there. We decide to give everything one last scan before we start heading down and kyle says "dude... I just spotted the world's biggest..... marmot." Well that's kind of a let down but whatever let's have a look. " how far out " I say and he replies "oh about 1000 yrds". I'm thinking no, there is no way you spotted a marmot at 1000 yrds. Kyle says "he must be 50 lbs!" Ok now im thinking there is no way there is a 50 lb marmot running around these hills. After some time I finally see this thing and determine its a wolverine digging up marmots and eating them! Pretty neat thing to see accept when he's heading right towards your trail down and you have no weapons. After a while he went into a rock face and didn't come out so we made our way down and hiked back to the truck.

Scouting trip two was more productive in the way of finding a more direct path to where we needed to be although it meant climbing up and over another ridge instead of our nice little walk through the sub alpine. After that the real climb started up a valley then mountain side that feels like walking up marbles. All of a sudden 600 dollar boots doesn't seem like such a rip off.
Cresting that ridge at last we laid eyes on the bowl that we were told the goats hang out in. What a beautiful place. Out come the scopes and we start picking apart the bowl. Once again, nothing.. I have to say I honestly didn't think it would be that hard to spot a goat. From what I heard getting in and out is the hardest part but actually seeing them isn't that difficult. So naturally were getting a bit depressed. We start glassing some other bowls around for a while to once again turn up nothing. Now I'm even doubting my optics. My scope is by no means top quality but were looking for white animals on dark rocks! Kyle takes another look at the big bowl with his binos and right away says "goats!" I throw mine up and just like I had imagined, plain as day there they stand. Lesson 3 of mountain hunting. Although naturally white, goats can make themselves invisible quite easily.

So here's the thing about kyle. When he spots an animal he tends to get very exited like the rest of us but it's kind of impossible to tell him no so when I look over and hes packing his bag to start down the valley there was no point in arguing. The other thing is were sitting on the edge of the steepest bowl we've been to yet and its a long way down. This ledge very quickly acquired the name "death valley". Off we go sliding down the marbles not thinking about the way back up or the fact it's well after noon already. Sliding down closer to the bottom kyle says sharply "goats right there!" About 500 yrds infront of us there is a ridge line and right on the end a rocky outcrop that had about 8 goats on it. We closed the distance a bit and set up again. It was hard to tell if any were billys as the mirage was strong and we couldn't get closer without being in plain view. Although 3 of them had that bulldog build. One stood out right away. It had a bad limp and after watching for a while it was obvious its leg was broken. This goat looked very big but there were 2 kids in the group and we couldn't tell if one was its kid or another's as they were all very close to each other. This goat got the name "hops". As they fed over the ridge we hiked to where they were. We located the goats on the far side of the bowl again and found a bunch more. 18 goats in total but none that we could 100% say billy.
We could have stayed there looking for ever, we were hooked. But we had to get back before dark and it was now 330.
Death valley looked alot shittier from the bottom... The boulder fields were almost the end of me and then the hard part of hiking the near vertical face. At one point I remember leaning on my side to rest and I was almost standing straight still. By the time we reached the top I was honestly not sure if I ever wanted to do that again much less with an extra 80 lbs in my pack. But we were hooked...

September long weekend is here and our bags are packed. I get off work Friday afternoon and head out to pick up kyle and Vito. We make it to the parking area around 830 pm and its dark. There's already one truck there with someone sleeping in thier tent beside it and were expecting more hunters to show up soon. We knew we wanted to be first in as we weren't sure who had been scouting the area and we had only seen goats in the one spot. So we packed our bags and started climbing...
The pack sure feels alot heavier when your packing for a few days. We reach the sub alpine and the first ridge and its too dark to see the peak. At this point in the day light we would go to the far right of the ridge where it is not as high and slightly less steep. We did our best but we ended up hitting her straight on. All of a sudden its 10 pm and were scaling jagged rock faces one at a time helping each other up. Even Vito wasn't impressed with the adventure at this point. We got to the point where we were too far up to go back down and it was only getting uglier. We managed to case the rock ledges and then it was 7 ft tall brush... At this point the only thing getting us through is the fact that in a few hours we will be finally hunting goats.
1230 am we reach the peak. We're looking across the valley trying to make out the ridges of the next mountain range we need to climb. We determine the right direction and start heading down and then out of the darkness of the night a wolf howls. Then another and another and another. There must have been about 8 wolves yipping and snarling and then you could hear a deer screaming as they ripped it apart about 100 yards down the valley. We're trying to keep Vito quiet at the slaughter is going on but hes wining too much so we make a quick retreat back up along the ridge and decide we better camp out for a few hours. Il say this, it sure was nice to relax for a bit but a very weary feeling trying to sleep in that little tent that night.

A short 3 hours later and we were up and breaking camp to finish the climb. It's not the greatest sleep when you pack 2 grown men and a dog into a 2 person mountain tent but it worked for the trip. It took quite a bit longer to get down the ridge and up the other side than we expected as it was dark for the first couple hours buy watching the sunrise that morning over a quick breakfast was magical. It was noon before we reached the peak where we had spotted the goats from before and to our surprise it was packed with snow... first week of September and we are not prepared for this.

If you havnt noticed we didn't stop much on this hunt and things happened very quickly. We were on a mission to have first pick of the goats in this area and not much was going to stand in our way.

Glassing from our vantage point in the snow didn't turn up any goats. We studied the rocks and crags for an hour or so before deciding to check out the surrounding bowls. Kyle says he's going to check out the top of the ridge to see if he can get a different angle. This takes about 5 minutes to get to the top so I went the other way to look down the other side. Once again I turn up nothing, but I'm not discouraged because now I know they are here and it's only 1 pm and we didn't see any until 3 pm on the scouting trip.
I walk back to my perch at the top of death valley and get comfy against my pack to glass until kyle returns. An hour later I wake up.. no Kyle or Vito. I grab my binos and throw them up to instantly see 3 goats right where we had left them. Another scan of the mountain side turns up 4 more. Game time. I run up to the top the ridge but Kyles not there. I started to follow his tracks down the ridge in the snow calling for him here and there. Now I'm starting to get worried. His tracks lead from the snow bank onto the rocky ledge then dissappear on the dry rock and its about 1000 ft straight down. I call again to hear nothing in return but the sharp winds. All thats going through my mind at this point is " f*ck.......F*CK!!!" Then out of nowhere I catch movement about 500 yards down the ridge. Here he comes dragging himself back up. I asked him why the hell was he all the way down there and he replies " oh I saw some fresh tracks and just kept following them. But I saw the goats, let's go!"

Moments later were starring down death valley with its fresh coating of powder. Of course the wind would blow all the snow in the valley up against the one place we have to climb down. I had packed 100 ft of rope to assist us down but there was no place to tie it to. Kyle looked over and with a sort of sick smile says "well... you first." I have to say the first step was the worst. Not knowing if my foot would stop sliding and somehow grab the 3/4 inch crush shale underneath or if I would just skid my way down to the boulders. The first 40 feet are definitely the steepest but after that it wasn't too bad to slide down. The faint thoughts rumbling around in my head of dreading the climb back up.

We were feeling the grind by the time we reached the small lake we had planned to camp at. The plan was to set up camp and unload our packs then head over to the bottom of the ridge to glass the bowl for the evening and hopefully finally lay eyes on a Billy. When we reached the lake I took a quick look through my binos and I could see A group of 5 goats working their way off the bluffs and one was already down in the shale slide close to the base of the bowl. This one also looked the biggest out of the group. I told kyle the situation and he just said "well I guess we better get the f*ck over there then eh?" Discussed and agreed upon. That tent flew up in what seemed like 3 minutes. I emptied our packs accept for what we needed and were off.
I forgot to mention earlier that when we reached the peak of death valley I was glassing and noticed a fog in my spotting scope. Upon further review and disassembly there was moisture on the inside of the eye piece. So my spotter was rendered useless and dead weight for the remainder of the trip.... not impressed with vortex.

It didn't take long to reach one of the knobs on the end of the ridge where we could glass from roughly 1000 yrds. Most of the goats were on the last bluff and the big one was still in the shale licking a small stream. We were sure he was a Billy now but we couldn't say as it was still too far to see much bone. But he looked to be almost twice the size of the others and had the classic massive front end. It didn't take long to recognize the familiar limp of one of the other goats. There was hops and this time it was clear that the one kid of the group was hers. I was almost disappointed as I was hoping it was a Billy and to be able to put it out of its misery. It was however amazing to watch her navigate the rock ledges and maneuver around with only 3 legs.
It was an easy decision to work our way down to the next knob as we were now in plain view but we felt safe that they wouldn't pay much attention to us from that range. At the bottom of the dip we dropped our packs and kyle grabbed his scope. Nearing the top we belly crawled through the grass and over the ridge. I went first with the scope and kyle held back a few feet with Vito as we hadn't taught him to belly crawl before the hunt. Laying prone and just resting the spotter in the grass I zeroed in on the big guy. It seemed forever before he turned his head but when he did there was no doubt in my mind that he was a Billy. Looked like a nice one too.
When we first set out I knew I wasn't going for a trophy goat. I wasn't even that confident we would kill one so I knew if we got in range of a decent billy I'd take the shot.
We switched spots and kyle went to have a look but his spotter had come apart in the middle into 2 pieces... NOT IMPRESSED WITH VORTEX!!! So hes fumbling around trying to put his scope together while im trying to judge my goat threw my binos and keep Vito hidden. Finally he sorts his life out and gets the scope up. The big guy wouldn't cooperate but kyle said the one next to him looked like a Billy aswel, then he said so is the 3rd! Then when he finally got a good look at the target goat we both knew it was go time. The problem was we were now at about 700 yrds and the only way closer is a straight shale slide down in plain view of the 3 billys, hops and her kid. I figured what the hell il give er a go. So I laid on my back and ever so slowly slid my way down the shale holding my rifle to my chest. Every time they would look I'd stop and wait until they fed again. By now they are all in the shale and I imagine they feel quite vulnerable close to the base of the mountain. I continue my sliding until I reach a semi flat spot with some vegetation. Il tell you right now my pants have never been so far up my ass after that slide and to boot I lost my tin of chew on the way down! I waved at kyle signaling him to come down while I got myself set up in the brush. We ranged him at about 500 and got steady...
A couple shots later and it was all over... what I waited for all year was happening. That moment after your animal is down and you finally know how it all went down instead of imagining it over and over. Kyle looked over and screamed "you just killed a mountain goat!!!"
I cant describe how it feels to feel ontop of the world when your literally at 8200 ft ontop of the world.
Then reality hits, it's 330 and our packs are back up the mountain and still have to get over to the goat. Luckily we made it over there pretty quickly and had a solid hour and a half to get pictures, Cape it, and bone it out. Fortunately it died in a creek so he was soaked for the pack out aswel.
I think the pack back to camp was the only time iv ever seriously contemplated just sitting down and sleeping the night away. I think if kyle wasn't there I would have. It was a long grind back up through the boulder fields in the dark. It sure didn't feel like we dropped that much elevation on the way down but I felt every foot of it on the way up. 10 ft forward then 10 ft up... 10 feet forward, 10 ft up, For hours. Camp was the most glorious iv ever seen. That tent looked like a penthouse suite. I got the goat salted and me and kyle sparked a victory cigar as we listened to the boulders roll down the slides. God damn I love the mountains.

I was so tired I neglected to eat dinner and I found out in the morning how bad that decision was. Up to that point in the trip I had eaten a couple pieces of cold pizza from the drive up and a handful of dried apple slices. Lesson 4 of mountain hunting. EAT PROPER MEALS!
I felt sick as I choked down my mountain house for breakfast but I knew I had to get it in me before facing death valley. And just like that it was time to pack up and make tracks. We split the meat and I threw the wet cape and horns into my pack. We had all day to make it out and we knew we could take our time. Death valley was a brutal grind like no other but knowing what we had just accomplished made it more enjoyable than ever. We made it up in record time, turned around for one last look at the bowl and took off. It was and experience il never forget and not a monster Billy but by far my best trophy and the one I'm most proud of. Good luck to all you new mountain hunters and thank you so much to all you veterans that helped me and any of you that help us newbies out. I learned mountain hunting is a serious task and 90% of the time you are not having any fun and its worse than anything you have ever done. But once it's all over its instantly the best time of your life!
Cheers y'all hope you enjoyed.

Had to come back and give this another read. Re-live the story a little. Remember some of the harsh details that start to fade over time. Anyways draws are out and looks like il be back up there in the same region chasing billies again this year. Get ready for round 2! Holding out for a late season long hair this time.
