I've heard that cow elk get very hormonal late January early February and the meat isn't as good....can anyone confirm or deny? Conditions are still not great there.

Never heard that one before. Not saying it isn't so, but doubt it

Id stay home, meat is awful!! Worst $hit out there! Not fit for dog food! Wouldn't waste your time heading up, buy beef! Moosin

I would say there could be some merit to that.

Shot a dry cow up there on about February 5th, 2014. It was good meat at the start but after a while in the freezer it had a stronger taste. The elk was in very good condition as it was a mild winter and they were on normal winter range near the Peace River. Still had a good amount of fat.

My son shot a pregnant cow elk near Tom's Lake in February a number of years ago and the meat wasn't very good. Seemed watery or lacking nutrients. I attributed it to being pregnant and being chased all over the countryside by hunters during the long antlerless season.
