Nice matched set!
I've wondered for awhile if the drop timing is a regional thing (weather, doe number, ect) or more determined by each buck?

Your gonna love it. It is like fishing. More relaxed, lots of fun. Also has the added benefit of keeping you in shape.

We just got almost a foot of snow here in the upper part of Kelowna so my shedding spots will have more than 2 feet. I wont get out until March or even April.

I find a lot of guys pound the hills way to early when most the critters are still packing bone. ive missed some nice muley sheds going too early only to find them the following year. focus on whitetail until late February then start the push on muleys. all my whitetail on my cam are still packing both sides as of boxing day. I'm hoping they start dropping soon!

We have had a few MD bucks around here lately and all have had both sides.
The earliest I've heard of deer dropping is the 8th of December. But that is not common.
I don't go in to the shedding areas too early, so I do not push the bucks out of one core area and they end up all over the hill. And it is a physically stressful time for deer.

Zippermouth nailed it. The very odd buck will drop early but the main drop is a long ways off.

Not only that but a lot of guys don't realize how much stress they are putting on ungulates at the toughest time of year for them. That and they push a lot of deer out of the country before they've dropped which leads to sheds all over the countryside instead of a much more confined area.

X2 Great advice .
Leave the ungulates along till March-April . Let them rest up over the winter months .
Beside its more fun in the spring time ... Tics are out too .

Nothing like a "tick magnet" ;)

If guys want something to help pass the time with over the winter I suggest getting out and killing some predators. It's a ton of fun and the ungulates will thank you!

how is walking through the hills putting tons of stress on the ungulates?
so people shouldn't go hiking or snowshoeing or sledding?
the deer aren't being chased or pursued, which would indeed stress them.

I agree with you Sofa King leaving the sheds on the lands where I live till April or may if you did do this others would find them some of you don't know how competitive it is in areas in the WK,EK there are even fist fights over places

If I was going to leave the shed hunting till April or May what's stopping the other hundreds of people doing the same ,,I say not,,people go out for walks in nature year around,,people go snowshoeing in the winter, hunter go cat hunting with their hounds in the winter, people go tobogganing in the winter time ,people go snowmobiling in the winter months ,trappers go trapping in the winter months
Loggers going to and from work on logging roads logging in the woods in the winter months..

Hunters shooting elk or bison late winter early spring months,, guess the management better shut down late season early spring hunts i'm sure hunters chasing animals at this time of the year puts stress on the game animals all said above ,,what happens when all said above does come in contact with a game animal ???? I guess no one should go into the woods till April or May ?????????????..

Being out in the woods and encountering a deer or other does not mean that you are pursuing them ,,the deer or other jump off for a short period then settle down ,,I treu shed hunter will not chase animals when they see them I know I don't I turn and go the other way to get around the deer or other if a person did continue to chase a deer or other on what I said above then yes it would put stress on them but I doubt that people out in the wild do not do this,,I know I don't..

=-ll---> As the Winter Solstice arrives like now the days get longer so the amount of daylight enters the deer family eyes. It's the amount of daylight that enters the deers eyes that runs his or hers life from birth on to death.
=-l---> Look up photo periodism and you will learn how bio's and science know this and most of us don't have a clue. We say oh no frost so no rut or too warm to start the rut etc.
+++ The weather does not change the estrus start for does it's the daylight from dawn to dusk hours and minutes that bring her in heat.
+++ The weather can help or hinder hunters and deer for activity levels tho, cuz animals move and become more active during the rut when weather system is a certain way or stay in the bush when inclement weather they stay together out of storm, so they become active or stand still more in brush. The weather has nothing to do with estrus start or end date it's photo periodism -- check spelling on last part, anyways the dropping is done by photoperiodism too it stops the bucks hormones down and the antler detaches accordingly.
x x x Big drop first medium and then small later -- April first or so new antlers start again
Jel -- Bop til they drop -- Photoperiodism -- Don't leave home without it! lol

yes you are right the main drop for mule deer start in mid Feb for WT the same ,,moose are off Jan Feb roll around I have found that the town bucks pack them longer then the deer out in the wild,,I have seen mule deer here in Cranbrook packing there head gear into late April..

Moose in our area will shed in December. Only the smaller bulls pack them past then. I've heard the onlder the animal the earlier they will drop. So if your finding them now means there are some old boys out there.

Same near Kamloops. My buddy had mulies packing in Logan Lake well into April as well last year. Makes you want to go back and re-hike areas you covered in Feb. Lots of traffic out there though. Guys are hiking like crazy from the start of Jan around the Loops.
Hopefully it wont get as bad as in some states where you need a shed licence and regulated seasons for picking up sheds. Guys down there were dogging the deer and harassing(chasing/following) them daily on quads and sleds to the point it has to be regulated to help the deer get through the winter unmolested.

Some guys here missed the point regarding stressing out deer/busting them out of the area and having a harder time finding sheds. We are talking about deer congregated on winter range. Not local town deer like the sheds posted above.

Like I said a experienced shed hunter will never chase after deer they know it's hard on the deer to do this at this time of the year as into the early spring months causing stress on the deer..

Live in Big Lake, up towards likely, willing to travel a ways, go blindfolded if need be. Don't want a share in the finds, just want to learn what i can from a seasoned shed hunting vet.

Wow, sorry but that'll be the day I take a course to go for a walk in the woods. If conditions are that tough for the game I'm not moving fast enough to harm them. Snow machines etc. that's a different ball game that could be addressed, not hiking or even snowshoeing. I've logged some wintering grounds in the fall/winter, drilled holes in the middle of cariboo migration routes, but now I need a course go go walk through it? Nope, common sense should be sufficient thanks. Jmo of course.

I hear you and agree about the common sense. To most of us it is just that and the majority are not a problem. Unfortunately, we see daily evidence right here on HBC that common sense is not common knowledge for a few guys. Finding a dink 4 or 2 pts shed means the world to them.

BC Gulf Island sheds are dropping. Found these on Feb 01, 2016 and they are the first set of sheds I have ever found!! This is a pretty big deal to me as a self taught newb scouting for the fall.

I found my first fresh mules yesterday! I was talking to the gf on the phone while I was watching to bucks fight... They each already dropped on side. ..after I got off the phone I looked back in the spotting scope and there was only one buck and a doe! Sure enough.. He dropped right there haha. There were 2 other bucks about 150 yards away too! Both packing decent head gear! I'm heading back once it gets light!!

My folks' neighbor has horses and often the mulies come to munch the horses' hay. Earlier this week a three point was feeding with its head stuck through the fence when the horses' owner came out the back. The three pointer went to run and got its antlers hung up in the fence. He wound up getting free after a second or two, but he left both his antlers behind.

With the amount of pressure those elk have in Region 8 during the GOS and after the "season" , yes its nice to see one mature bull able to survive long enuff to shed his antlers .

From my perspective that shed......

Main Beam - 42"

Trez - 9"
Royal - 12"
SirRoyal - 10"
Mass - 25" (7", 7", 6", 5")

If ur looking for "what that bull might score"......
Considering that all things r equal and the right side matches the left......
122" x 2 = 244"
Guessing width @ 40"
To answer ur question on a "guess" of his potential gross score, looks like he would come out at 284"ish.
Always tough to be accurate with numbers from pics but we have handled a lot of Reg 8 bone and that's what I see.

Good score .308slayer and good on you for getting out.
I hope ur bone pile grows over the years.
Shedding is an awesome way to get to "know" the inventory in a given area.
Gives u an understanding of the overall age class as well, ( am I finding any drops of bulls that are 5 yrs old+ or pretty much all sheds found are from bulls 2 to 4 yrs old etc)

If a guy does a lot of shedding the pile can get too big...spouses get annoyed.
Pick a few out that have meaning and pile 'em.

Yes it is nice to see because we know even if they survive the meat grinder that is the legal season in Region 8 there is still the "other" season - the one that goes 24/7/365

The thing is, you have to work at it to get those mature elk, how many of those who get to hunt the 'other' season actually put in that time and effort???

The "other" season one doesn't need to work as hard due to weather, feed, winter range, night time, spring feed, etc. Concentrates the critters, throw in a massive decline in hunting pressure and game resumes a more relaxed lifestyle temporarily. Take a drive on the other side of the city and you would be amazed at the mature specimens they have lying around as dog chew toys. But for the rest of us folks, you nailed it! Effort, homework, boot miles needed in order to hunt and find mature animals.

No one has to tell me about leg work I have done enough of that every year yesterday for an example I put on around 20k out for 9 hours found only a couple old elk sheds ,,,the sheds most times are not found without lots of time kilometers and sweat put on in order to find a few sheds or sometimes nothing ,,it's something like hunting the more time spent in the woods and miles put on is how you will be rewarded..
