View Full Version : How do you carry your ATV?

About to buy my first ATV. I have settled on the Yamaha 700 Kodiak. Looks like I won't be able to put it in the box of my Ram 3500 short box unless the tailgate is down. That may interfere with the jack on my travel trailer that I generally use for outdoor activities. Could go back to the truck camper and utility trailer that I had years ago, but don't really want to. I'd be interested to see (pics) and hear about the various ways people carry their ATV's. Thanks in advance.

I use a trailer for ATVs and a camper to sleep in. I have seen ramps that lift the front of the atv over the cab of the truck or you might me able to use a sled deck

I use a small flat deck trailer for my quad, I keep the canopy on my truck most of the year. I've list my trust in my ramps now that my truck is lifted a bit, might buy a sled deck eventually

A friend of mine has a Ford short box and had to make ramps out of lumber so the front of the quad sits up on them. Like the one previously posted pick shows.

I have the same problem. I take my tailgate off if I am hauling my trailer. The back wheels of the quad sit right in my box but I am about 4 inches away from my tailgate closing.
if I am not pulling my trailer i move the quad back a little so there is some weight on the tailgate to keep it from bouncing.

Get a Yamaha Kodiak 450. Fits in my 6.5 ft box with the tailgate closed.

If you back it in to the box you might be able to close the gate.

Put it in the utility trailer, then you can load the box of your truck with gear.

this is what I got and I have a 09 dodge 3500 shortbox. Works really well and still give you lots of room underneath for stuff. I like that I can drive right on and off. No reverse required. You need to get there ramps unless you are handy and have time to put something together. Worth looking into I say. Either that or a sled deck

Have Arctic Cat 500 which won't fit in my Chev 2500 short Box which is 6'5". I either leave the tailgate down, run it up on ramps to the to the top of my aluminum storage box , or tow it (and usually someone elses) in my utility trailer. Shorter trips I usually just leave the tailgate down but if over say 45 mins or rougher roads I usually run it up on to my aluminum box and then close the tailgate. All ways work well.

This is why I would never buy a short box, doesn't fit my needs.
My buddy uses a ramp setup similar to the guys above. This way he can still use a portion of his box for other things.

Ive got a 450 and do the same, it just fits in my 3500 Dodge with the tailgate shut. It rides in a trailer when the camper is on the truck...

You can't buy a new Kodiak 450 unless it is old stock. Yamaha quit making them for 2016.

When I ordered the moose is loose lodge I ordered it with the extended hitch on the trailer for just that reason most of my pals have short boxes but with now no problems. See about getting the old hitch of the trailer taken off for a longer one. E @G hitch. Before anything else.

Maybe consider a Superhitch.

I have a buddy (he's driven semi's and dump trucks most of his life) who has a 3500, packs his SxS in the truck box with the tailgate down, and pulls a travel trailer.

He uses an "extender" on his hitch, and it works great for him.

I'll see him tomorrow and if I remember I'll ask him what brand he bought and let you know.

I have had the same problem with a dodge short box and a full size Polaris. I found if I park the front wheels on my dry box (built some wood ramps for this), and put 2x6 under the rear tires its perfect. Without the 2x6 there wasn't enough clearance to cinch the quad suspension down without hitting the tailgate, but with them its perfect. This set up costs nothing if you already have a dry box.

My truck is a 2004 Chev Duramax 2500 with 6.5 foot box and my ATV is a 2007 Honda Rubicon 500 with front mounted Warn winch and roller fairlead. If I drive the quad nose first into the box, I can't close the gate and the fairlead comes dangerously close to my back window. So I back my ATV into the box of my truck and, voila, the gate closes with the fairlead resting on the top of the gate. Plus, there is lots of clearance between back window and rear of quad.

I have one of the UTV versions of this for my Pioneer 700. It's a little bit of an ass clencher the first few times getting it up there, but works great. I have it on a Ford F350 short box.

You can put the quad in the back of your truck and tent it and if your family is not into tenting it then you will have to go back to the camper trailer set up or get a canopy and a u built trailer to meet your needs there is no other way around it unless you're willing to pay big bucks for a fifth wheel trailer that has a drive in door in the back of the fifth wheeler..

This right here^
I have a 07 ram shortbox and that's how I load my Honda rubicon, with the tailgate closed cut some 2x6s to fit snug from the back of the box up to the drybox. With the ramps going all the way to the back it'll bring the back tires up a few inchs and you'll have clearance for the exhaust. Drive er up, put the brake on hop off close the tailgate then me it roll back.

But a smaller bike like my 88 fourtrax 300, fits just fine without the drybox.

I use a set of cheap car ramps from Can Tire. Meant for driving up on for oil change.
Gave enough lift to get the gate closed on my 6' Dodge box. Now I have 5'8" Chev box and the tailgate stays down.
If I am towing I take the tailgate off.

Great link that tool box combo is just the ticket for me.I am trying to figure out how to bring a ATV pull behind trailer for my Grizz this might free up enough space.

As per my previous post I have virtually the same set-up. Had the tool box and a headache rack and simply had a set of ramps built for the inside of the truck box up to the top of the tool box. Cost me $90.00

Would be cool to have a tidy tank built into that to fuel the quads...hate having lots of Jerry cans

This cost me about 200$ to make. I welded two more recievers on from princess auto 10$ each and welded up the frame for around 180$. I have used this setup when using my camper or when hauling two quads. I plug in portable tow lights 25$ from princess auto when Im on the highway. I simply dont care about any visable license plate, so it stays put .

No issues DINO ?my cousin did a similar thing. He did that to the back of his trailer it ended up bending the trailer frame.

I really have to agree with you bc steve it looks scary and if you are doing this for years rust might be your biggest problem and if not paying attention it will become your worst nightmare when the quad goes for a tumble down the road, also if you get into washouts and crosscuts the back end will always hit causeing more damage, I don't mean to say it doesn't work , I just seems to be a little bit of a problem, but then again what do I know, Dino if it works for you works for me.

I have had this unit for years with absolutely no issues. I am hard on all equipment and this bracket is still going strong. As far as cross cuts go, I don't really even drive a truck this big into areas with cross ditches. That's what I have a quad or samurai for. I know it's not for most people but it works great for me and gets a lot of use.
