Hey guys i am Christopher, I am barely 18, live in Coquitlam, just bought a win mag 300 off of Mr. Dean, and am totaly pumped up to go hunting... so I was lazying around (took summer semester off) when I peer out the window and see 3 black bears (I think one might be 6.5 feet :) ) waltzing in my pond. As a proud new hunter of this fine, fine province I noticed that they're fur was excellent.

It's two cubs and a sow. Maybe you should study your CORE book again before you go and "pump some lead into something with fur and claws". Perhaps you'd do well to find someone to take you out hunting for your first time as well.

Yup, I agree. One small sow, 2 yearling cubs.

Take someone that knows bears wiht you. And don't shoot any bears unless they are on thier own.

Slow down lil brotha !

I know your excited but ID your target !

Maybe 4 sure get somebody to take you out or tell us what experience you have.

Your 300WM is a big gun. Better pound lots of lead at a gun range before you head out in the woods...Please

Are you a member of a club ?

+1....

Judging by 85% of your posts, I would say that your enthusiasm is great, but you need to get together with someone who is experienced and follow their lead....

Huntnig is more about 'pumping lead into animals' and thats one of those things that you'll realize....

Christopher,
Don't sweat it.....Bears are definately one of if not the least studied critters out there......weird cause they are everywhere, seems most just don't watch them enough...... :|

Cool vids though........sure neat to watch Bears acting like bears, playing and such...really they act alot like dogs and certainly are just as smart.

As pointed out Yes you've got a "young" Sow with what are definately last Year's cubs (2 year olds)....in my experiences she'll likely tolerate them tagging along for the rest of the summer ( they could get chased away by a Boar when Breeding time arrives shortly though ) otherwise she will definately give them the boot before she dens up.

Again some Cool vids and Thanks for sharing them8)

Christopher, if you are this excited to go and shoot something with claws and teeth I would hate to hear about your first date. Does the phrase loaded gun going off in your hand sound familiar?

The Cubs would have been born last winter and emerged with Mommy in the spring.......this would be thier "second" year hence 2 year olds :)

Sows will often get bred again when still rearing cubs from the previous year.......sometimes not.

Thats absolutely true. Sometimes you will see a sow with a cub or two which is much bigger than the other(s). This is because the sow has bred again. This year, we spotted a sow with four cubs. Never seen that much before, usually three is the number but its nice to see that they are healthy enough to produce so many. As previously posted, hunting is more than about "pumping lead". As you mature into the sport, you ( some never do) become more about conservation and preservation of our sport. I like to be out there to enjoy the wilderness and the comraderie of all my fellows.

Real nice bear video but sorry for the mess they made - but bears will be bears and the chance to witness that was worth it imo.

as for IDbefore you shoot-yes,and anyone who shot a ''huge'' bear only to walk up on a yearling lying there knows the sickening feeling....the size of a bear can be hard to judge-especially if they are closer than you think-the 200 yard ''huge bear'' shrinks when it turns out to be only 100 yards away.A quick rule is ears-if you can see prominent ears-its a young bear-no matter how ''huge'' it looks

No word of a lie...I know a guy who shot a porcupine because he was so excited about shooting a bear. He saw it in a ditch and shot it quickly, and realized it was a porcupine when he walked up on it.

The guy is a tool, and I find it funny as hell to laugh at the situation, but it just shows ya that things like this could happen if you're not careful.....lol

Probably not....

The guy is a true idiot....I asked him what he would have done if it was a cub grizzly or something different.....

That got his attention...but it shows that some guys just get really excited and dont ID targets before shooting....

I do agree with the others on here that suggested that you find an expierenced hunter to show you the ropes.
Good luck

On a different note, I've never beleived that you can 'grow into' a gun....guns that are too big for the shooter just cause him/her a lot of grief, bad habits, flinches, etc, etc.....

so if you shoot a .22 you can't grow into a bigger gun?? sure ya can!

by the way 300 win mag aint that tough, im sure he can handle it :)

Rackmastr
05-19-2007, 03:13 PM
Derp....you read that all wrong...go back and read my post again.....

What I posted is that I dont think a person can buy a gun thats too big for you and grow into it by shooting it....

I think that its better to start small, get good basics, and understand how things work well and learn to handle recoil slowly.

Start someone out on a 338 RUM and they simply wont grow into it....

I'm sure he'll handle the 300WM fine as its not a giant cartridge......I was merely pointing out my opinion on starting with a gun and trying to 'grow into it'.....just my opinion as I dont think its the best way to do things....

From what i have read and been told, A female cub will stay with the sow for up to two or three years, to learn how to rear its cubs.
