SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) - A grizzly bear has ventured into downtown Squamish today, and police are working with conservation experts to locate it, and move it out of town. RCMP Corporal Dave Ritchie says black bears are common in Squamish but this is the first time in recent memory that a grizzly has made its way into town.

Ritchie says so far the bear has not posed a danger but they are trying to move it along. "It's a 1 or 2 year old bear, and we're trying to locate tracks, trap it, and relocate it." Corporal Ritchie says if they can't trap the bear and it starts to show aggressive behavior, the animal may have to be destroyed.

A number of grizzlies have been seen at lower elevation by loggers etc. Deep snowpack is keeping many animals down low.

I know there are sightings towards Pemberton, but do you ever hear of them in the general Whistler vicinity? Up in the alpine in the summer?

A local CO told me just a few weeks back that there's a 700 pound Grumbly bear up the Elaho these days. Mind you, I would rather meet one up the valley with Mr Tikka by my shoulder than walking the kids around the fruit and veg section in the Save On in Squamish.

Somehow the media will twist it around and blame it on Global warming, over-hunting, logging or something like that. Maybe someone killed his mama, took away the tree that made up his den or caught all his salmon:roll:(or ALL of the above). I'm sure they'll give him a name before it's all said and done.

There are transient populations. Very Very rare to see one. I think when they did hair traps, they only turned up 2 or 3 individual bears. There are more around the Squamish/Ashlu/Elaho and Pemberton areas.

Sure hope this bear likes to eat green. It may be a turning point for bear hunting if a tourist got eaten!!

My understanding is that an expert from Whistler/Pemberton has been called in to deal with the bear. MoE officials say that there is only ONE thing that an adult grizzly bear is frightened of:

The last time a grizzly was shot in Whistler itself (that I recall) was about 20 years ago. I ran into a grizzly in the swamp near Green Lake about the same time.

Every few years one does turn up somewhere in town, though.

Grizzlies use a corridor to travel that is not too far form Whistler, south. It woudl not surprise me one bit for a grizzly to turn up in one of the northern parts of Whsitler, either.

I remember reading something in the paper about biologists being worried about grizzlies in an area in Whistler that will be used for skiing during the olympics.

Hey Fisher Dude - what kind of hat is this guy wearing and where do you buy them? Looks pretty good for keeping you warm on those frosty, cold October moose hunts.
