i am heading up to powell river in 2 weeks to meet a client and he wants me to take him bear hunting... I have hunted for deer for years but never been for bear... I was thinking of taking my 270 but i am not sure if it packs enough punch for the bears...

also wondering if anyone can help me if you simply just road hunt and cover area as we have about 5 hours to hunt and thats it..... Do i look in clear cuts or are there any other hot spots to look at.... I have never done this so its kinda a shot in the dark...

I was thinking if we were sucessful i could google a few recipes up and have a local game cutter or butcher do the cutting of the meat and then go up there in a week to pick it up...

Any tips would be appreciated....

A 270 will be more than enough for a black bear, I'm using a 270 win for my grizzly so for a blackie it qwill be enough.

Good luck!!

5 hours.......yep, stick to roads and cover as much ground as possible, glass clearings etc. Most bears right now will be gobbling up the fresh greenery along roadsides etc.

Oh and the 270 will dump a Bear on his Fat head too BTW !
Best of luck ! 8)

the 270 will do the job just fine.
i usually see most of my bears in the clear cuts or on the road.as will was sayin they like to eat the greens on the side of the road.
good luck!!

Have used a .270 for ALL of my black bears....will work just fine....

i would use the last 5 hours of the day..cutblocks and roadsides pretty much covers it..go slow and use optics..GOOD LUCK.

I pretty much LOVE the last hour of the day for bears they gain confidence in the low light and shadows and coolness of the impending darkness...

Evening time is when i have seen them the most , but unless its unusually hot you stand a good chance to see them through out the day. Your 270 will do the trick, But as with any calibre i'd be ready for a quick follow up shot just in case your bear makes a run for cover. My buddy had cheese filled smokies made from some of his bear and it was excellent!! Good Luck. Rob

As far as regs go, there is no open season on any bear less than two years old or any bear in its company.

In other words, no cubs and no sows with cubs.

You can do anything you want with bear meat exept eat it rare.

Many people like it prepared into sausage type things.

My personal preference is into burger meat, stew, goulash, roasts and ribs. Bear ribs browned, then stewed in tomato sauce with lots of chopped onion and garlic is awesome!

What I want to know is where to find clients that I can take hunting!!! That would be sweet... getting paid to "entertain" clients that way! Hell I thought golf was good, occassional fishing trips are good but HUNTING!!!! Whooo Hoooo!!

It'll probably have "Mickey Mouse" ears if it is under two.

You won't find any Bear alone if it's less then two......well maybe orphaned cubs but they don't usually last too long.....Big Boars, Cats & dogs eat em like popcorn :)

Any Lone bear potentially could be a SOW.....I always try to "observe" the bear for abit if it deems to be a shooter. Nobody wants to pop a Bear only to find a few cubs sitting on it when you get to it:-(

Sows without Cubs are fair game too BTW.....although most avoid them and look for the Larger Boars. I agree.....evenings are best so sleep in and don't fret about it.

one last question.... I spoke to a friend who used to hunt bear and he stopped... He said that "once he hot a bear with worms he had no desire to bear hunt again.." he left it at that...

my question is what worms? what do i do if the bear has these worms.... where would i find them....

thems some nasty pictures in the first two links Mr Elkhound. :-?

How are the bears on the Sunshine coast for worms? Are they clean or do you think it's something that's more dependent on the individual bear?

well as you saw the worms were between the meat and hide not in the meat so you are good to go. Bears on the coast have been great eating for us

It's not ruined it's just not a pond anymore now it's a swimming hole for the bear family.Think of it as free entertainment.
