for most of us, deer season is closed or about to close, and some of us beat the winter blues by heading out and hunting predators.

If you shoot a coyote this winter and want to share a picture or story, feel free to add to this thread. Any info on guns, bullets, scopes, calls, setups for calling, baiting, etc, can be asked here and maybe we can help out in any ways.

Coyotes, WOLVES, lynx, bobcats, cougars...trappers post up too!

I Have 20L pails full of meat scraps and water frozen ready to go! This is my first season looking for wolves u guys got any tips for setting up meatsicles? I know of a few areas around kamloops with them just not sure what the best tactic for getting them out of the thick stuff. My Idea was to dump meatsicle in open area near tree line and set up a couple hundred yards away and wait, maybe throw some calls?

This interests me too. I have saved all the scraps from three deer and plan to put it to good use. I believe SSS mentioned freezing a small length of chain into the bait and using that to secure it to something solid. I need to get on this as I am running a second freezer which for the most part is bait. Figured I'd wait till the bow season was over to give the archers some peace and quiet.

This is my brand new Varmint set up. Tikka T3 Hunter in 204 Ruger. Topped with Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40. Heading to William's Lake this weekend to hopefully nail coyotes, wolves, and if I am really lucky, a cougar. Will definitely post all the pics of what we are able to get. Stay tuned. Next week I hope to be back with pictures.

Went out for one last ditch effort for a WT buck today after work. I had walked a few hundred meters into the trees from where I had parked my truck. Figured I would take a rest against a tree for a few minutes. I was sitting there about 2 minutes when a Squirrel about 30yds away starting chirping like crazy. I figured he had spotted me and was pissed off that I was there. I turned around to see where he was and out of my lower peripheral I saw something moving.

It it took me a few seconds to comprehend what was going on but it was a Bobcat.....and it was stalking me. It disappeared behind a couple of tree trunks for a few seconds so I took the opportunity to get my gun up. I waited until it popped its head into view and put one in its throat. Tore up the rib cage and had a small exit behind the left shoulder.

She ended up being about 20yds from me when I put her down.

Got this male coyote this morning, got out early calling in a creek bottom that i got my first coyote/ double coyote kill in dec of 2014. Found a good spot started calling with distress calls within 10 minutes i coyote pops out into easy shooting range but i had no line of sight and would be shooting through alot of sticks. I waited patiently this coyote knew something was up and cruised back up the hill staying persistant i kept calling the same call with little coyote yips added in there every now and then. Nothing was happening so i figured what the hell did some challenge howls for a minute or two waited 5 minutes did a long female howl waited 2 minutes did a long male answer howl......then a few yips and squeeks, then outta nowhere i hear crunching snow to my left by the time i seen him he was 40 yards and wasnt stopping a quick lip squeek he flinches looking up my way and down he goes number 13 of the year i need to get a mount for my camera i always use it for dirtbiking but wouldnt mind getting some of these hunts on camera

.308SLAYER
12-12-2015, 10:48 AM
Skinning them out ive kept a couple of the nice ones, gave a few away, ive also had a few where i ripped the tails off of the fur which was pretty unfortunate after all the work. I got a buddy that just started trapping last winter he said he would start taking the fur after i skin it out definetly getting abit better wanting to get a 22 250 these .243 65 grain sometimes seem to make a little more mess then i would like.

Went out yesterday... Spotted 4 about a mile down river... They messed around and finally crossed to a side channel heading North, drove down to intercept them to another access point. Figured I had time so checked to see what time the Seahawks game was on today... They blew right by me, at about 300 yards on the river, while I was web surfing....

bailed out out of there , drove another couple miles North to another access.... After 20 minutes, all 4 come booting up River... At 500 yards they start heading into the brush... Gave them a couple hand calls... 2 came back out, then into about 350, but no matter what sound I tried, they sat on the river bank and would not come... After 15 mins they got bored and went into a thicket... Never showed again.

Headed out this afternoon for the first attempt of the winter. Hiked 2km and set up along the edge of a field, placed my Foxpro about 25 yards to my left. Started the set with rabbit distress on 1/4 volume. I played it for about 45 seconds then mute. 3 mins into the stand a coyote appears to my left, just 35 yards away. I managed to slowly get the rifle over and punched it frontal with the Tikka 223. It dropped. Foxbang switched my call to coyote in distress max volume. I let it play for about 20 seconds then mute. Went back to rabbit distress, playing it again for 45 seconds or so on 1/4 volume then hit mute. After a few mins I went back to rabbit distess 1/2 volume, then pause...1/4 volume, then mute. 10 mins into the stand now I decide to wind it down with some low volume squirrel distress. 3 mins later a coyote pops out just 25 yards from me, spots me and is back in the bush. I get the gun pointed that way, gave a few lip squeeks and it comes back out just a few feet from the dead coyote. Broadside I sent the 63gr Nosler on its way. Not a bad way to start the year! I hunt 7b and seen a few yotes on crown in cut blocks but not often, mostly on the roads, but 90% I see them searching for rodents in the farmers fields.

I've taken a few out in the logging country. Biggest problem, like wolf hunting, is being within earshot of one. They have a much lower population density and likely a larger home range. I find if you do find some, they're more apt to come to the call

Ask Pete (on this site) or any trapper ... I used to send them to Vancouver Fur auction .... this was some years ago and I don't have the address . There was another fur auction place in Alta if I recall . You will have to scrape , stretch and dry first of course .... with the postage rates I don't know if theres much profit now .

Went out near Cache Creek on Friday. Worked the Foxpro on 4 different stands and got nothing. I don't think it's cold enough to get them coming in hot. I have used a rabbit distress manual call for years and just started playing with the Fox pro. Started with rabbit call on the first stand ,next stand tried pup in distress, next stand fawn in distress. Fourth stand honked truck horn and screamed like a Sasquatch and called in 2 Ravens. Any tips from fellow Foxpro users would be appreciated. I was raised in Sask hunting coyotes and know how to set up a stand just not much experience with electronic calls.

Not sure if you're calling with the Foxpro on steady, but I find best results come from sparingly using distress with silence in between (for yotes). call for 20-40 seconds, mute for 2-5 mins. repeat... volume low, increasing as you go. i rarely call above 50% volume with distress unless its windy or wide open country. throw in some pup distress towards end of set. and wait patiently 10-15 mins after your last calls. good luck!

soon i\ll focus mainly on coyote vocals

If you know any cattle farmers this is a good spot to hunt. The coyotes love hanging around when the cows are dropping calves. If possible they go after the calf possibly killing the mother in the process, or if theyre not that lucky they eat the fresh shit from calves nursing mothers enriched milk lots of nutrients. Or the birthing sac/placenta and what not. The area i hunt coyotes is very tough every morning, in different areas you can hear 10 plus coyotes they are very educated dogs more then one has seen a friend go down yet as good of a caller as i think i am lots of days its hard to pull out one theyll often howl at 200 yards and not come in i had one the other day pop up outta the draw stand there for say 10 seconds looking over my way the e caller was going and he just continued on his way out of sight. Even if theyre not vocal theyre there if theres good amount of tracks in a area theyre there. Very cunning animal i have loads of respect for the coyote them young ones are dumb but those older dogs that have seen a thing or two i find they are a challenge

Yes daybreak i believe they are easier to hunt during the mating season. Because its there mating season coyotes from last years litter will most of the times break of from mom and go to find a territory and mate for themselves. That being said there is deff some single yotes out there looking for a mate thats where the howls and yips come into play whimpers. Even females will come to a female howl ive seen it and have had success she is clearly pissed there was another female in her territory she more or less came in wanting to push me out. And them males wow can you get them going last febuary i had an un believable stand i howled just once i big male came running over the hill perched himself on a cut off stump howling and barking his face off. 150 200 yards boom i missed. He ran over the hill im thinking game over tbis day i was cheating, turned on the ki yi on the turbo dog that coyote and three others came running at my position full tilt. No barks were stopping these coyotes they circled my position all on a full run i ended up having to stand up and made a standing shot on a female at 75 yards coyotes running everywhere stopping confused the caller was still going i missed two otger shots on diff dogs(fevered) needless to say ive had some of my most exciting coyote hunts during feb and march

There will be many crows, ravens and magpies calling and that will pull in the predators for miles. I have never hunted bait so I dont know if you should call or just wait. After any shot a dying coyote sound can produce again and again and that I do know.

Just putting some meatcicles together now.

A thought came to mind... could bait piles backfire and provide a good source of food making the dogs that much stronger at this time of year and especially going into the mate? A well fed bitch would produce more pups. I know the intent is to put them out and eliminate the visitors but how many are actually taken and how many visit in the dark to fill their bellies? I'd hate to be helping them thrive.

On our hike into the 3rd stand, 10am, we spot a coyote ahead @ 525 yards. We decide to let him carry on and hope to call him in once we get a bit closer. After 20 mins of rabbit distress, I switched to Coyote duet. That fired up some coyotes a few hundred yards to our SE. Threw in some pup distress and female in heat whimpers. 40 mins in, was playing a mixture of Coyote distress with a Primos raven/crow territorial fight, when my partner whispered that he seen one. I ramped the volume down and he began to lip squeek. I spot the coyote as it makes a few leaps towards the call/decoy. 80 yards broadside and the Fierce 300WSM claims another song dog. Partner spots another and reloads, fires but missed. A young female

I boogies over there the female seen me and ran the male came running out of the draw boom song dog down turned started ki yi ing 5 minutes later his women comes trotting right back into missed at a couple hundred yards still a good morning. Fresh snow, so put on as many miles as possible.

Cut sign of a pack of around 15 and followed hard. Missed them before seeing them, they bailed down to the thick river bottoms.
Waited a half hour and caught one in the open coming back.

They were howling all around me, but none would come out. I was sure hoping to get "attacked" like the people on the CBC. I even turned the dog loose to maybe lure them in, no luck.

Anyways, 1 is better than none, but I sure wanted all of them.

buddy nailed this guy today. He popped out at 54 yards, came in to a combo of cottontail distress & coyote in heat howls

Called these guys out of hiding with pup serenade howls and crow sounds on the turbo dog they popped out of a Gulley 300 yards away and weren't popping up again the being impatient for my chance I quickly made my way over to where they were upon walking over the hill I'm huffing and puffin a coyote sees me and bolts this male comes trotting up out of the draw I seen him in he didnt go far. Layer down quickly one bark stopped him dumped him at about 150 immediately went to ki yi. 5 minutes later his women comes back despite clearly seeing me. She hung up and I missed a little bit of a long bomb probably 250 300

Anyone have any recent luck in region 7A?

I've gone out 4 times in the past two weeks with an e caller and nothing. I'm either in the wrong spots out of hearing distance or I'm doing something wrong. Maybe a bit of both.

My gun's dialed in with a sub MOA load. I put on a bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 scope. I just can't seem to stumble across any coyotes or wolves.

Ran into four yotes yesterday and got one. Took a shot at the first pair I saw but missed. Not sure how as they were only 75 yds away staring straight at me. Later in the afternoon saw this one and knocked her down at about 150. As I was messing around with her I turned around and there was another one standing back almost where I shot this one from. As soon as we looked at each other he was gone into the bush. Think I'll go back next week with the 17 and see if I can call some in.
