I was out duck hunting earlier and a shell blew apart in my chamber when I shot. The bottom ring of brass totally seperated, The other piece of brass stuck in my breach, The wadding blew out the bottom of my gun and the shell crumpled and got stuck on my bolt. I was shooting 3 inch winchester super X xpert 2 shot. I am 99.9% sure I didn't have any obsctructions in my gun. Anyone ever have this happen or hear of it? Oh yeah I finally have my hearing back lol. Can't figure out how to post a pic from my phone sorry guys. Just looking for any ideas of what happened. (Faulty shell?)

Thanks

All cleaned and taken apart last night and I was taking good care of it today but weird things can happen I suppose. Some of the shells had a bit of surface rust nothing serious. I've burned through endless amounts of rusty brass. My first thought was corrosion but the shells are about a month old and ain't that bad

Yes I emailed winchester just to see what they got to say about it. Cracked the locking block in my bolt to when she went off. What a day. Got the bird I was shooting at anyway

Have a look on the weatherby website, I think there was an "important notice " about a recall.

I've been all over the internet looking for answers and can't find much. I've normally been shooting 2 3/4 out of it but I decided to switch to the 3 inch (rates for 2 3/4 and 3) for the bigger shell when the geese come in. My gun has a "light load" piston and a "heavy load" one. I've been using the light load because it cycles perfectly with it. Could it be something to do with the pressure using the light load piston instead of the heavy? Just a thought. Chalking it up to that it a bad load. Heading to wanstalls tomorrow to see if they've got any ideas

I would guess that you had an obstruction in your barrel. Why were you 99.9% sure only? Was it your first shot of the day?

I would guess that you had an obstruction in your barrel. Why were you 99.9% sure only? Was it your first shot of the day? I agree with BB have heard of a shell deconstructing and leaving residue (pieces) in the barrel so when the next shell loads and fires interesting stuff happens. Will post a pic of my old barrel when I find it .

I'm saying 99.9% because weird things can happen but it was my fifth shot. I didn't have my gun in any positions to get anything in the chamber or barrel that's why I'm stumped

Think it had something to do with a certain blond individual shooting in his idea of a permitted area

Have the same gun and the exact same situation happened to me last year. It was 6 hours into my day on on the second shot of a three shot cycle. thought my ear drum exploded. I also have the pump action in the 08 and I've never gotten around to getting my semi fixed. I wouldn't mind know what you end up doing and how much it cost you to fix.

How old were the shells? The plastic casing can breakdown if not stored properly or if really old. Might be the reason it separated.

i had similar happen to me as a young hunter. With an Ithica feather weight model 37 slipped fell after i got up. Forgot to unload and check for blockage . As the action was real heavy birds were everywhere but i will never make that mistake again. The barrel opened up just above the breech like banana i still remember the flash in front of my eyes. And the smell of the gun powder. i dont wish this experience on anyone but i learned valuable lesson be safe out there everyone every time

That happened in 1975, 870 Remington, off the dow chemical marsh in Delta.Dropped the gun leaving in a apparent hurry must have picked up some mud in the barrel, next day went out for night flite first shot boom, yup I remember the flash too ,banana barrel, cut it off as a safety reminder still have it 40 years later ,gun and rest of barrel long disappeared....

Could the shells (shot) be rusty ? I've seen that after taking round out in the wet and not drying them . Also that gun uses different inserts to control you gas for the 23/4-3" shells, did you check that ?
