Nov. 22, 2015 in the Peace. After getting skunked last year, being surrounded by elk with no shot in Sept., and crawling about 1km total trying for a nice archery DEMU buck, I was hungry this deer season!
Got both of these bucks the same day! DEWT in morning, DEMU in afternoon.
I just know their was a big whitey hanging in the bush as a herd of 12 emerged from the aspens into the morning sun.
Howling winds, I was huddled against a fencepost, trying to act like a bush! I waited a while, got ready, watched with my binos for a while until the little buck finally stood broadside clear of the does. I got in position, put the crosshairs on him and noticed the lead doe had me pegged. Wait, or shoot?
I shot. A buck in the hand and all that! Plus, I only had 4 days to hunt.
Just shy of 300 yards leaning on a post. Good thing it was there because it was blowing so hard, a tree wouldnt do. Pretty happy!!
Got him back to my buddies house, hung, skinned and cooling. Did some chores and headed out late to the evening muley spot.
Walking in, saw a cow moose.....cool.
I got to a spot where the field drops into a small canyon. I went over the canyon rim, walked down 30 yards, pulled out my buddie's rattling antlers and did a 1 minute sequence. Rattling both antlers antlers and brush.
Watched the canyon for less than a minute, started to stand to go get set up behing a tree, and a mule deer buck trotted out in the field above me!
Binos up, and....he's a decent buck, but hes only a 3 point -DANG!
Wait....no, he's a definite 4 on the right! He starts trotting away and luckily I had my bleat call handy, so I let out a bleat and got in kneeling/ sitting position. He turned, I shot, and he dropped to the shot. 150 yards. WAHOO!!! Unbelievable. 2 bucks in one day!
Neither buck is overly large but I am so happy and thankful and have enjoyed my season so much this year. I think it comes down to a positive attitude and expecting the game to be there. It is fun seeing game even if you dont connect.
Glad to be able to post some success though....finally!!!
Oh, and I did it with my old Sako 30-06 shooting 150 gr Barnes TTSX. Recovered the bullet from the muley and it performed textbook. Will post pic later.
PS: anyone could embed my photos in the post, it would be appreciated.
