Went out for a day hunt yesterday with my son and a friend of mine that s a new hunter. My son knows the area very well as he's been hunting there since he was a we lad with the old man.So I left him on his own and took a friend thats a newbie hunter. We all had a great morning seeing lots of game ,my son missed a 5 point that didn't give him any time.I had a similar experiance earlier when my hunting bud saw a good sized buck and I caught a glimse of him and his big rack wandering away with no chance for a decent shot.We headed after him knowing he was going to the top of this ridge and after circling around we came out above him and spooked a spiker and a doe out of their beds.We then went back for lunch exchanging stories on our morning hunt. After warming up by the fire and a full belly of Mule deer stew the 3 of us took off for the afternoon. Was out showing my newb hunter some of my favorite spots and I came upon this old skidder trail in a select logged site and was about to tell him I always see deer here when he taps me and there it is a rack shining off the sun light.I got a little lucky this time as he was with a doe and not as concerned about me.He moved off a little and I could still see his head and neck as the body was below behind the terrain.I've also been practising a lot of precision shooting at the range this year so I raised my new weatherby vanguard S2 in 223 and locked on his neck and bang flop he never even took a step.So after teaching my bud how to field dress and load we slowly worked our way back too find that #1 son has taken a spike at aprox the same time just after 2pm.My son said there were 2 together a spike and a 3 point and they both bailed so he shot as they were heading out and ended up with the spike with a lung shot, but still good as his was moving. Was an awsome day!!!!Hard to get much better than that.

Way to go, I missed a chance on a cranker on Saturday. Was an awesome healthy hike up and down the mountain though. Well done you two, and about the .223 :) ...bah, who cares, good shot.
