Just out of curiosity, has anyone shot a interior whitetail? I am curious on the size (dressed size) of the whitetails. We were out for a drive last night and seen two groups of whitetails west of Quesnel that appeared to be smaller than your typical mule deer. There is even evidence of cross breeding. One whitetail doe with what appeared was a blacktail tail. I will get pictures the next time I go out just to prove it.

Thanx

The tail on whitetail deer vary in shades of colour from light tan right to dark black which is quite common (and looking like a coastal Blacktail deer's tail).

It is not evidence of cross breeding. I can show you pictures of whitetails from the States that have dark tails and no where near any mule deer areas.

Interior whities are typically smaller in body than mulies. My 162 inch whitey dressed at 145 lbs to the butcher. Any mulies that age (5 yrs) and rack size tend to be closer to 165 - 180 or more lbs. First year whities tend to yield up about 85 lbs, where the mulies are 95 - 100 lbs. Second year whities will usually be 105 - 110 lbs, mulies 120 - 130 lbs.

Dakota whitetails from the Peace region will have much larger bodies than their interior cousins...count on an extra 15 - 35% in body weight for each age class.

I've heard lots of stories of ones weighing 200 lbs, 250 lbs, 300 lbs...but in all the deer kills I've been in on (125 - 150? animals), I've never personally seen it. My guess is that those butchers were able to retire early. Or does everyone in my group (most with a deer entry or two in the BC Book) just shoot dinks?

Tell me your secret if you ever find a Whitetail buck out Blackwater road/or Nazko Highway Timbow. All I have ever seen were whitetail does with muley does.

I'm sure there's a Whitey buck out there somewhere, but he sure is good at hiding.

BCrams, do you have any pictures of Whitey Bucks from the Blackwater Strain of Whitetails?

Well I know what I saw was not a typical whitetail. If you can post some pictures I'd like to see. I will try to get pictures of the deer I saw.

I know what you saw Timbow. I've seen whitetails around Quesnel when working with the exact dark tails you are talking about .... trust me, they aren't hybrids. I've seen those tail markings in the Robson Valley, Peace River, the Kootenays and even in Saskatchewan (far from any mule deer).

Perhaps you're a friend of Tinney's :)

Whitetail in Quesnel?

Yep. More and more are moving into the region every year. They're even in Williams Lake.

Thanks for the info. I suspected that they had moved in by what was said. They weren't there in the late 60's and early 70's, but there sure were some nice, and I mean nice, tasting Mulies around Kersley and Dragon Mtn.

The Deer or the Hunters ?

Actually yes my encounters with Whitetails are few and far between but the ones I've seen certainly are smaller then the Local Muleys by a large margin. :)

3 years ago I say 2 white tail way up high near Mt. Sweeny (near the huckle berry mine 130 km from Houston) I could not beleive my eyes. My buddy was with me. By the time we finished reading the regs to see if they were open they had run 200 yards and disappeared in the forest. We both felt they were very large bodied. It's amazing what you see when looking for a moose and every other frigin creature on earth crawls out instead.
