Short story... drove some, hiked a bunch and saw one deer all day. He was way at the back of a cut block at about 220 yards. We knew he was big but we couldn't make out his points at first. We watched long enough to finally determine that at least one side had a split on the third tine.

I took a rest and waited till he turned enough to show me a target. The 300WSM put him down where he stood. Once we got up to him we realized he was technically a 7 x 5 but I like to refer to him as a 3 x 3... with style.

He weighed 197lbs without guts, head or legs. Skinned and ready for the butcher he weighs 1̶4̶7̶l̶b̶s̶.

*** I was pretty sure that I had some weight on the scale when I zeroed it before re-weighing the skinned deer the other day. Before taking it to the butcher today, I dropped the deer off the hook, zeroed the scale and then picked it back up. 163lbs... not the 147lbs I thought it was. I'm very happy with that!

Final bit to the story... for the number crunching folks among us.

Just picked everything up from the butcher. I assume that the deer weighed ~250lbs on the hoof. It was 197lbs with no head, legs or guts. It was then 163lbs as it was presented to my butcher. I got back 53lbs of bone/scrap and 124lbs of meat products (some sausage had pork trim added).

So, a 250lbs animal turned into ~110lbs of actual meat (163 - 53). If you assume that it was 220lbs when the head and legs were still attached but it had been gutted, then a rule of thumb of 50% meat (by weight) of field dressed animal is pretty darn close.

Get a tooth aged it could be in regression as an older stud buck loses his jeans.
Jel -- The buck could be 8 years or older? -- Loss of testosterone -- prolly was a monster rack a few years ago -- but still the bone is hard and quite thick with mass making it a wall hanger
