Yes they do, and a higher percentage of the shiras moose are spike fork.
The one you shot must have almost looked like a cow at first glance, he's tiny. He'll be delicious and you can almost wrestle him into the truck by yourself!! My brother in law is in his early 30's and is on spike fork number 8 or so..... Horse shoes!

I would guess that at least 50% of the bulls shot in the region 6 GOS are last years calves, really dumb and tender. I helped my buddy pack one out this year and gosh was it small. 4 back pack loads using the gutless method.

Congrats on your moose

Last two we got were 325 lbs and 300 lbs skinned & trimmed quarters, on the hook at the butcher's. That's a fair jag of prime meat!

I think both but mostly luck. We have had awesome success with the little ones. We did a count and in the last 20 years we have taken 9. On one trip in 7-06 we had no draw. Found a cow and big bull so argued with him for about an hour and when we were walking back to our truck we heard a bawling sound behind us. It was a spike running down the trail right at us. Couldn't believe it. We can only guess that all the grunting and calling we had been doing had brought him in.

That is probably just right as last year's calf. With this new designation of spike/fork it's still the same regulation but the thinking that it's only last year's calf is changing. Our son got a 5 x 2 and with the weight of 480 on the hook that is definitely not last year's calf.

I wonder if there's any thought to giving some leeway on some of the "mistakes" that are made in the field. A friend shot a perfect 2 x 3 and then discovered the curled tine that drops right at the base and disappears into the hair. Meets the definition of a point so technically illegal. Such a shame that that animal is given to someone else (won't get into who) and the hunter has to tag out. Seems that some discretion should be allowed.

hats the one that takes you 20 minutes to figure out that it is infact legal.... one second to shoot... and an eternity as you walk up to it and have to keep telling yourself you were correct.. to have the shit scared out of you when at first the horn is hid by the ear! lol

perfect eater!

Coincidence? I shot a 2x5 that weighed 480 on the hook, too! lol!

"Tooth for the Truth" said it was a 4 year old.

Hmm, maybe they come in bunches. The one my son got had a partner with him, a 5 x 3. I'd give odds they were bros so I'm guessing a genetic thing re the imbalance on the antler.

Mine had an old injury on the opposite side shoulder of the gimpy 2 point antler.

Most certainly prime meat, the very best meat there is in my opinion.
And yes, they come to calls.

Second last spike bull moose( 10" spike on one side and a nub on the other ) I got had a gimpy hind leg and a few ribs that had been broken. Ribs were on opposite sides ( possibly shot the season before ) and the hind leg was 2x bigger( diameter ) than the other leg. Bull had to weigh close to 450lbs hanging.
