Just back after 2 1/2 weeks with my wife hunting Pheasant, Sharptail, and Hungarian Partridge. Carlo went hard for the whole time and pointed dozens and dozens of birds through very challenging terrain. I just can't say enough about hunting upland birds with a good dog....................

Two weeks hunting birds on the prairies sounds like a little bit of heaven. I'm thinking of a similar trip for next year, that will include a few days of waterfowl in Sask.

Carlos looks great.

Love the pics and sounds like a hunt that many dream of!! I totally understand your thoughts on hunting over a pointer. There is just something about watching a good bird dog work! I too am planning a similar trip next year. What are your thoughts on the populations of pheasants this year? and Huns?

It was heaven, and the weather more than cooperated. The Pheasants where we were seemed to be a little down but we could always get our limit everyday, but the amount of Sharpies and Huns more than made up for it. The spots we hit could easily have pushed up 50 to 70 Sharpies everyday and the Huns were close to that. Not all those birds were hittable being that they might fly up out of range but again could always get our limit......................................

I think the real reason I hunt Upland Birds is to just watch a good dog do his thing, killing birds is secondary although I want to complete the task for the dog as the point and retrieval finishes it all off. As I mentioned to Sasquatch, the Pheasants were down where I was but heard farther toward Brooks the Pheasants were plentiful and I don't know about Huns or Sharptail. I have never seen as many Sharptails and Hungarian Partridge as I did on this trip. Amazing hunting!!!!

Nice! Thanks for posting. I'm heading for Brooks on the 6th with my dog. This will be my 3rd year there. It's been a blast both previous trips

This brings back big memories for me as a kid growing up hunting prairie chickens and huns with my dad.
He and the dog used to pick me up from school, I remember waiting and looking out the window of the school watching for him to show up.
I can still remember the smell of the fresh cut grain and see the chickens sunning on the stooks...
Would love to get back and take my son...

thanks for sharing

The hunt and shooting will end one day but the stockpiling of memories we have with our wonderful companion dogs will never cease.

Thanks for sharing your memories.......................................

That looks great. I just came back from Alberta but did not have as much luck.

Although, I had no dog and I was using traditional archery tackle. I saw birds and even got some shots off but I could not convert...I need more dynamic shooting practice with the bow...and maybe a good dog.

How much does it cost to hunt pheasants in Alberta? I assume you didn't use a guide.
