Shooting a 30-06, is 165 grain enough or should I go higher?

You're fine for black bear, might want to get at least 180gr. for grizzly bear, just for added assurance.

Is 180 30-06 to heavy for black bear and blacktails?

I've taken two bears with .308 165g TSX. They didn't make it more then 10 yards away.

You'll be fine, just aim for the shoulder to keep him from running too far. Bears are tough SOB's and no matter how well you tag em, there's a good chance they'll get up and run.

180 is for sure good for bear, and some guys swear by them for blacktail. I'm not an expert on ballistics but I've been told the slower bullet leaves less damage but some of the more experienced guys can correct me if I'm wrong.
