Finding it harder to find flies I want to use (colour, size, patterns, ect) I decided to take it upon myself to tech myself how to tie flies. Always just loaded up on nymphs and chronies at fly shops. But now I'm discovering that finding materials can be tough too. Now I find it sucks not living close to Coquitlam any more. But here's what I've been spinning up.

I had some delta drifters kicking around... so I've butchered a few as you'll see. All egg sucking leech patterns are made with delta drifters.

Have you tried coating your chironomids with Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails nail polish? They will last a lot longer and the stuff adds a little different lustre to the flies.
If your looking for materials, PM srupp for info. He has a great collection of flies and materials.

Haven't tried the hard as nails. Just been using head cement and superfly rubber seal of some sort. Not a fan of the superfly rubber stuff. It catches fibers and makes them stick everywhere. I'm headed to Sechelt for a wedding at halloween, so I'll have to stop in at searun and load up.

Good Job on teaching yourself. Catching a fish on a fly that you have tied yourself is pretty cool. Now for the constructive part. If you are on Hunting BC you are on the internet, so you should use You tube and pick a pattern that you want to tie and work on one fly till it looks proportioned properly. If that doesn't work look to finding a fly tying class or Sportsmans club that has a fly tying night. There a lot of basic techniques that can be mastered quite easily using flies that can be fished right away. Until you whip finish the fly you have the ability to undo anything that doesn't look right and if it still doesn't look right use a razor knife and start again. Keep at it and it will start to become easier. Good luck and good tying

For being "self taught" you've done great.
If you can get to a "class" that teaches fly tying you should.
There are so many techniques that make tying easy.
If you ever get down to Kelowna, send me a PM and I will take you to Trout Waters. Great store !!!

You can say they suck. I really don't mind. I work harder and stuff when people say I suck at something.

I did see a fair share of tying demos at Oscar's in Smithers when I was living up on the area. I'm kickong myself for not paying more attention. They tied a lot of steelhead flies which I think is the reason I pick all the funky colours. Also my dad slays the coho on big ugly green, black and blue flies in the Bella Coola.

I have been watching a lot of In The Riffle tying videos on youtube then just modifying the patterns. Also heard Brian Chan say that late season rainbows like big ugly things that don't even have to look like anything. I know this has work for me in the past. Since I still have a whack of tried and true store bought patterns, I figured I'd add some diversity. But I do agree that I should pick a pattern and master that one.

Not defending any of the flies I've tied, just giving you an idea of where the inspiration comes from.

When I fished the Red deer river this year, this was deadly on whotefish and grayling. Missed a lot of hits on the long tail

Also, haven't figured out the whip finish tool. I know how to use it, but I find I have more control when I do it by hand.

Also need to get a good pair of curved scissors, hair stacker and ceramic bobbins. The ones I have now cut any thread that isn't a 3/0 or heavier. Which obviously can't tie the more delicate flies with the heavier thread.

One of the guys that taught us fly tying never used a whip finish tool, just fingers. He was awesome at tying.

Buy good quality tools. They will last a long time and make the job a lot easier.

Just keep at it and you will find that your technique will continually improve.

I'd rather have people tell me which ones are bad, that way I can work on those areas.

In film school I had a professor tell us that even though art is expressive and up to your own interpretation, if it doesn't convey your message or ignite emotion (whether that emotion is good or bad, love or hate) it's not doing it's job and it sucks. And just because a technique or equipment is a high level, employed improperly can take away from the final project.

So just because someone doesn't like what you've done doesn't make them righ and you wrong, or vice versa. But you should at least consider what they and go back and look at what you've done and see where you can improve.

That lesson kind of stuck with me and that's why I don't think all kids should be "winners" at everything in school.

Most lakes I believe you can use barbed hooks but most streams and rivers are barbless.

If you are looking for cheap materials or even free try visiting a taxidermist, they usually have scrapes hanging around that are already tanned. I have received garbage bags full of bear, elk, deer, mountain goat and moose scrapes all of which are in lots of patterns. Eventually after you get rid of some of the tying bugs come up with some easy to tie and cheap to make flies so when you are crunched for time and you want to get on the water you can still meet your tying needs. I think size and colour is usually what will match the hatch and satisfy most fish but it is fun tying the more challenging and detailed flies. Good job on the flies, I like the eye you have for your choronomids.

That one is pretty neat.

Gotta use up them red goose biots. I've caught fish on weirder so it doesn't hurt to play around. A blue leech has been doing well for me this winter, second only to a big peach boobie. Stuff I would have laughed at three years ago.

I seem to do well with crazy patterns and colours on the colder days in mid September to freeze up. Bull trout also seem to like goofy pattern/colour combinations. And yeah... the red biots seem to last forever.

Looks like your getting more skilled with the tying Warnniklz. I like this thread because if I get real close to the screen and scroll through all the pictures it's like I'm on acid. Far out man!

Here are a few Youtube links for you to study with if you like. All these guys are awesome to watch and learn from. Do yourself a favour and watch a bunch of vids from each guy and your tying will improve dramatically. You will save a lot of time and money if you follow these guys. Believe me, I have boxes of old flies from my learning days that are a reminder of how much you can waste over a year or two. It really sinks in when you take a razor blade to your early ties to reuse the hooks. Tying material ain't cheap as you know.

I find Rowley's vids are the best to learn from as his teaching style is very direct but kind, with lots of side tips thrown in and his production is great. You will figure stuff out way quicker watching these guys tie. McPhail is amazing but way more advanced. Kent has lots of great chronie patterns to try.

I set up my vice in front of my laptop and tie as I watch the vids. It's a great way to learn as you can pause the vids and go back if you missed something. I fish probably 90% of my own flies now and the fish seem to like them. Keep tying man and it will be fun to watch as your skills improve. Remember less is more with flies. Chronies only have 7 segments on the abdomen in nature. Wrap accordingly.

Its a good habit to tie patterns in groups of 3-5. Do it assembly line style and your boxes will fill up. It's a good idea to have a few each of a pattern in case the bite is on for a particular fly. Nothing worse then snapping of a fly and you only had one in the box. If your fishing around Kamloops this spring give me a call and we can go hit some lakes.
