It's my sons 11th birthday coming up. Last year he got a .22 this year I'm looking to get him a solid first big game rifle. He is tall but pretty scrawny so I don't want anything to big. What's a good caliber for deer and moose that won't kill the kid???

I just got a savage axis package for 349$ 30-06 with a bushnell banner scope. 150 grain and the kick isn't bad at all. I'm 5'11 170lbs . For the price it's a damn tac driver

Savage Axis 7mm08, adjust trigger .........I like 30-06 but for a young new hunter 7mm08 better choice.

I would look at the Weatherby Vanguard 2 youth model in 7mm-08 or .243, but would lean more towards a 7mm-08
I just picked one up for my daughter in the Girls Hunt2 model.

The Vanguard Youth Model comes with extra stock spacers for when he grows, not to mention Sub M.O.A guarantee, and an awesome trigger.

For deer i use a russian sks with just iron sights, it uses 7.62x39 hardly has any kick at all. not the most accurate gun out there but the deer are always well within 100 yards. For moose I am going to use my newly purchased weatherby 30-06

My sons first rifle at 10 was a 243. He killed deer, bears and 3 moose with that rig. Oh yeah, a goat too. Barnes x 85 grainers broke shoulders in moose. Very little recoil so he learned to shoot it very well. Grizz huntin next year so I moved him up to a 708.

Rifles are like shoes. He'll grow into it.If he can't handle the recoil call him out on it till he can!It will make him the man you want him to be!

For his 11th birthday eh... ok.

If you handload get a 260 if not a 243 or 7-08 with lighter bullets. All calibres that will be useful to him for the long haul. A model 7 or other carbine with short LOP stock would be great. A full sized stock can be added later.

What ever you buy, get a limbsaver airtech. It's suppose to be 40% better then the original airtech. You can buy them from amazon.ca for $50. I have one on my t3 lite on 3006 and I can barely feel any recoil. I would try finding a bit heavy rifle like a vanguard series 2 in 308. Low recoil and he can move up to bigger bullets. Practice with cheap ammo and hunt with the good stuff.

Thanks guys. The poll would definitely lean me towards a youth 7mm08. And I want him to shoit lots and enjoy it so a limb saver will help for sure.

another vote for 7mm08. seems like a super versatile, light recoil round. A friend dropped a large moose with one last year no problem.

Look at one of these clamp on muzzle brakes http://www.hss.net.au/index.php?cPath=118 They work well and do not seem loud.

Another for 7-08. A little more juice than the 243 and will serve as a great all around game rifle for a life time. Do some research on the 25-06 as well. Shot my buddies a couple times and I'm thinking that will be my next rifle

My kids uses a .243, but keep in mind they grow so fast so if you can borrow a .243 because he will go from a small kid to a big kid. my son can shoulder a 30/06 now thats hes 14 so im buying him a big boy gun now lol
