Well I'm going to start with our hunt with riverjet... It was an amazing time, beautiful scenery and ten days of back pack hunting. We saw lots of beautiful scenery, but with high winds and warm temps, the animals were not easy to come by. I will spoil a bit by saying we did kill a nice moose and story and pics will trickle in as my time allows😈

We started on sept 10 getting boated in by Kevin from riverjet, and let me tell you as an okangan boy, the scenery was incredible and Kevin is a top notch dude and provides a hell of a service well worth the money!

It took Kurt and I about 2 hrs to get camp set up the way we wanted it and we couldn't wait any longer to put on our packs and spike out for a few nights. We hiked about 3.5 miles in and set up camp to try to bugle in a nice bull elk.

We spent the first few days spiked out glassing hill sides and pushing bush, with the wild ass winds, there was not much for elk talk going on in the bush. So we said to hell with it, let's hike back to main camp, get some good sleep and see what's going on near the river.

We hunted the next day and a half near the river trying to get lucky and catch something coming down for a drink, to no avail. So we decided to do day hikes back into the "elk valley" where we were knew they had to be hanging out!

The next day we hiked back in and where we popped outta the spruces is a nice meadow in the middle of the valley. It was the first morning with frost and without wind so we knew we were in for some action. We had two bull elk going right away. One that seemed to be about 400 yards up the hill on our right and one right close to us on our left. I had him screaming at us ready for a fight! I sent Kurt in on the one on the left, as I hung back to bugle in hopes he would come in a bit. FYI we had decided prior to the hunt Kurt would get first shot as he has always been there to help me in the past and always seemed to watch me kill stuff.

We figured we were well within 100 yards of this bull and still the one behind me was getting closer, when all of a sudden a pack of wolves started howling quite close as well!!! I was like wtf wolves, really?! We are so close!! Anyway the Bulls stopped bugling, and after about half hour Kurt made his way back to the edge of the meadow where I was standing.

we were a little stumped not knowing what to do. Do we make the hour hike back to camp and try to get away from the wolves as we were sure that nothing would be too vocal with them near by. As we contemplated I heard a crack about 100 yards away and said "shh something is coming out"

monasheemountainman
09-24-2015, 12:28 AM
I saw the glimpse of a paddle and said moose don't move! I told Kurt to get his gun ready and I'll make sure he is legal. Within 10 seconds he walked out and he was down!!!

He isn't the biggest moose out there but he makes up for it in character. He has 4 on each front with one of his sides splitting into two! Great looking moose that he will do a skull hooker mount with!

Shot him at 840 am took us 2.5 hrs to debone and 3 trips 2 miles each way to pack out. It was 8 pm when we hung the last game bag back at camp!

dont worry it's stupid anyway lol. So we packed the meat out and hung it at camp, had about 10 rums each, and slept in the next morning. We spent the next few days hunting around camp and walking up the river etc...

Five of diamonds for bulls, or bacon!
tiny spinners or fly rod for grayling.
I wouldn't be working too hard at it either with that kinda real estate to explore:)

We were getting a little bit of elk chatter around the river, but nothing like the "elk valley" where we had 2 going close to us when we ended up shooting the moose. So we thought well maybe we will hike back in there. We decided we would have to be very cautious going by the moose carcass in case there was a bear on it, and the horse trail we were using comes out at 90 yards from the carcass.

we were pretty relieved to see just a few Ravens munching on the carcass, so we hiked up the ridge and tried a few bugles and did some glassing. The wind really picked up later in the afternoon so calling was useless, we decided to start the hike back to camp. As we crested the hill over looking the meadow with the carcass, I threw the glasses up to check the carcass about 350 yards down below us. My heart sank. In between us and our trail to camp was a massive fcukin grizzly bear! I remember vividly his head was huge and his ears were pointing pretty much straight sideways off the side of his head! We stood there for a few minutes and watched him. I snapped a couple pictures, but they are on a different camera so I'll try to get them uploaded later. For now hopefully this video sums it up. Sorry you gotta look at my ugly mug. (It shows the bear on my camera) luckily the wind was in our favour blowing hard from him to us. So we skirted around him thru the spruces, giving him about 500 yards of space between us.
