One of my dreams has been to hunt on horseback for caribou. I was able to do that this sept with my son in the Chilcotin area in region 5. He got a nice 6 x6 Caribou. While gutting the first animal a larger 7 x8 walked out into the clearing and was also shot, so made it real easy. We both called it a hunt of a lifetime. We saw about 100 caribou each day. So lots of caribou. We knew very little about horseback riding but after the hunt we are now "experts" Beautiful country, beautiful animal, great guide. Nothing tastes better than super fresh caribou heart or liver fried back at camp. Saw lots of sheds, probably more than 30 or 40, the moose definitely like the high country in winter! Blackwater River Outfitters still has a few openings for Caribou and Moose this fall for resident or non resident at a very attractive price. If you still don't have your animal I suggest you contact Tom 250-316-0333 or 250-249-0042 Photos are below.

Was this a guided hunt or a packing service? If I am not mistaken region 5 caribou are a quota species for G/O's. I also think that there are rules about services that a packer can provide??

A good legal Caribou hunt via horse is an awesome experience.

I have done father and son horseback hunts. Best time we ever had. We didn't get anything. To many wolves. They had a wolf cull going on.I seen lots of wolves. I would sure do it again. What does cariboo taste like?

I recognize Tom and big ole Benny. I did this hunt in 2013 with Blackwater and had a great time. Looks like the same place that I got my caribou. Blackwater is for real and a bargain for both caribou & moose.

what is your issue with that?...that a full head mount is ruined with the hide cut so high? I am not trying to be a dick just wondering?

Sounds like Srupp is just pointing out that if they want to get wall mounts the taxidermist is not going to be happy...
probably getting euro mounts. nice bulls regardless... caribou is good eating meat...

Steve is a good guy,,,he is probably referring to the fact that most shoulder mounts are better if cut from the back of the neck as when its on the wall you cannot see the stitch line etc...

Blackbart, please don't post comments unless you know what you are talking about
180 grainer. Tom just bought the territory in the last few months. He has guided there for many years and an excellent guide. No need to make such negative comments.
Steven, not everyone wants a full head mount. What happens if we want just the antlers or an European mount?

thanks for those of you who posted positive comments. Yes my son described it as a hunt of a lifetime, just like I did and my son is an experienced hunter.
for blackbart and 180 grainer I will brag a bit.
my son by age 14 had likely shot more animals than most hunters in BC. he is now 20. At the age of 14 he had 2 Bison (leh) first one at 11 years old. one caribou, 3 bull moose, approx. 15 Haida Gwaii deer, 2 or 3 black bear, & numerous Grouse, so I am very proud of him Here is the Bull moose he got at age 12.

Great hunt no doubt! Thanks for sharing, this is definitely on my bucket list. I'm not familiar with scoring Boo but these are monsters compared to the ones I see in the northern bc Rockies. Congrats on the trip, your son is quite the killer:)

Hmmm wow..
First post " congradulations well done Father and Son "..true and succinct genuine appreciation on great outcome.

Second post " hmm looks like meat hunt?"
Just the observation that the cape was ruined..was apparantly not going to be shoulder mount with cut up front.but the guide would have double checked with you the hunter...no judgement..it was a great cariboo worthy of a mount..but your choice..you chose european mount..your boo, your hunt, your $$$
Please dont read anything more into it than was mentioned..lol its a great bull worthy of celebration in song and dance..even chosing a european mount the cape was primo and worth some coin .
Again congradulations well done..top end of good representation of the areas adult cariboo.
Cheers

For the record srupp is very positive helpful member.

On another note my caribou hunt with my dad we still talk about every time we talk. (Daily) lol.

Beauty bulls great job.

Nothing wrong with a meat hunt. Then again not everyone wants a mounted head for the living room or has the space for one. Nothing wrong with a European style mount. The son's glowing description of the hunt with his father was one of the highlights of my week and those memories I am sure are the son's greatest trophy of the hunt.
