I just got home from my leh moose hunt in 5-14... I got it done in the end again I was left wishing I had used my bow. For now you get the short story as it is family time. I will do a more in depth story and a couple product reviews in the next couple days when I have more time. After 2 days of frustration and seeing no sign of moose anywhere in our area, our rancher friend that lets us hunt on his property said lets go find you a buck. Well he found me one to say the least.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg162/foxtail-offroad/2015%20Moose%20hunt/20150914_192702_zpsdbpcokag.jpg (http://s248.photobucket.com/user/foxtail-offroad/media/2015%20Moose%20hunt/20150914_192702_zpsdbpcokag.jpg.html)

The next day, my brother and I found a small area up an old grown in road that was very promising, fresh sign and lots of it. This was my brothers first moose hunt and we each had a tag. I wanted to concentrate all my efforts on that area but my brother wasn't sure. I caved and took my brother into every cutblock and meadow in the area... Nothing. Meanwhile my dad and his friend were looking for sign in other areas... Nothing. I took my brother back into the area with all the sign early the next morning and walked in on the old grown in road. About 10 mins in we saw a cow moose. Sweet! Further in we found a big shed from last year. This is the spot! We went at it hard for the next 2 days and got no new sign. My brother got discouraged... So back at the ranch, our rancher friend says to my brother, "come with me in the morning, we'll find you a moose." That next day was our last day of our hunt so it was do or die. I said I am going in there to find that bull today. I went in by myself paked the truck and walked like a ninja into the area. 2 mins in I walked by a cow with 2 calfs. Things are looking good. Make my way down the road and in the dense brush to my right I hear a loud huff and a large animal thumping away. Damn... Was that my chance? I press on to the clearing at the end of the road, found a comfy spot in a natural blind and started calling... And I have a sexy moose call... 2 hours and nothing... I was getting hungry and thirsty and I had left my stuff in the truck so I decided to sneak back for a lunch break. I was walking as quiet and slow as I had walked in. When I noticed a speck of black... Binos... Nope just the same stump I look at every time I walk past. Then another black speck... Nope just another stump... Wait... This stump has tines! That's my bull!

I will say this... It is nearly impossible to try to hear which way a moose is going after the shot with your heart pounding in your ears.

I was having major doubts but figured I would give it all I had on the last day. Was going to stay till dark if I had to. Got it in to the butcher and it ended up being 580# on the hook quartered. We had to cut away a good chunk of a hind quarter from the bullet going through the neck and into the hind :( ... And some of the ribs from the second shot. We figure he would have been around 1000# whole. My dad ended up getting a nice 4x4 muley as well.

One of the products I used on this trip I kind of boight by accident. While trying to get the hunt buddy app on my phone last year, I ended up getting ihunter BC instead by mistake. I payed $6 for it so I figured I would try it out. It is absolutely fantastic. Has sat photos and maps you can cache, MU's, GPS, regulations, and it is simple to use. I checked it constantly and was able to hike into areas I would have never known were there, find meadows and swamps that were very close but not visible. When you tap anywhere on the map it gives you options to add a waypoint or check the seasons and species for that area. Or go directly to the page of the regs for the area. I highly recommend ihunter BC.

The planning started months ago. Trying to figure out days off with my brother and myself with work and get the schedule figured out with my wife and our business(absolutely crazy right now... I should not be leaving!). Our moose draw was from the 10th to the 30th of September so we had planned to try and be up there on the 10th and hunt until the 20th. Had work all booked off and was ready to go! Unfortunately my wife could not get things right for Friday the 11th at the business so I had to stay and help. My dad and his friend had already gone up early thursday morning. My brother arrived at my door at 3:34pm and I scolded him for being 4 minutes late. We loaded all my gear in his truck and were off. I had all the turns marked on my iHunter app GPS the and camp marked the night before and had been looking at the area zoomed right in so to cache all the sat photo data on my phone.(worked awesom! Great app)

We pulled into camp about 12:30am and snuggled into our beds almost too excited to sleep... But a long exhausting day helped get the snoring started... Woke up around 6 and my dad already had breakfast and coffee going. We decided to explore the area a bit. We always used to put in for 5-13 a or b but the odds were better in 5-14 and both my brother and I drew tags. So I hopped in with my dad and my dads buddy hopped in with my brother and we went checking out some promosing and recommended a
recommended spots. We went all over 5-14 and found no new sign. Got lost more than a few times on old roads that didn't go "through" anymore or culverts were ripped out for maintenance. There wasn't much for sign anywhere. Didn't even see much for deer... Just a few does with fawns.

Beautiful everywhere we went and we were hunting so the no sign was a bit discouraging but didn't bother me much. I told my dad "I don't care if we get a moose or not.... I am just happy to be up here!" he agreed. One of the only wildlife we spotted the first day...

Day 2 was the same... Both trucks but stay together. Got into some crazy roads with 2 trucks and being cocky. Got way into Stum lake (white pelican park) and it looked like it went through... Well I guess it did one day long ago but does not anymore. We put something through the sidewall and we were losing daylight.

The third morning my brother and I decided to walk into an area that was close by... About a 15 minute drive away... I liked the look of it and our rancher friend said he had shot a couple moose in there 30 years ago lol. As soon as we parked the truck and got out I liked it. There was good sign and 3 good swamps and a couple good meadows all in a small area. We walked in slow and quiet and saw good sign. When we got to the first swamp there was some sign but not real fresh. The second swamp was more promising. We found a real nice shed with no chew marks at all. Then we heard splashing in the swamp. I tried calling but no luck. We worked our way in to the edge of the swamp and saw... Half a dozen cattle :( great we were tracking cattle lol.

We worked our way out and back to the ranchers place for lunch and stopped to take some not great picks of a herd of elk in a field.

We told our rancher friend about our day and that we were planning on going back in there in the morning. Thats when he said "let's go find you a buck. Not much story there... He drove us to a field... Got out... Waited 20 mins and 4 lil bucks walked into the field with big heavy deer following. He was twice the size of the other bucks. The funny thing was we had a hard time seeing if he was 4... Kept looking like a 3 the way he was turned. Once we were sure, I let him have it. He dropped on the spot.... The other 4 deer were trying to get him up and he got back up. I gave him another and he went down. Ground shrinkage was the opposite... We got smaller as we got closer. This is the biggest deer I have ever shot and I was pumped to say the least. (Photo is in first post)

The next morning we went in slow and quiet. We didn't really know what to expect. There was no fresh sign but I still had a good feeling. We were in about 800 yards when we came around a corner and locked eyes with a cow moose all by her lonesome. She saw us and trotted away. I did a short cow call and she came back slowly as my brother and I tried to grow horns on her. No luck. So we kept walking. At the end of the road we settled in to a nice natural blind and did some grunting and cow calls. We could hear something a ways into the thick stuff moving around but it disappeared. I checked my ihunter app and saw another meadow through the timber about 400 yards away. We walked in and saw nothing but a nice meadow.

X factor, I am using the LG G-Flex it is in between the G2 and G3. I really like it. My next phone will probably be the G4.

The next day my brother and I went back into the area I liked so much. Again we could hear movement but nothing would respond to calls. Stayed in there till around 3pm looking around and headed out to the ranch again to meet up with my dad and his buddy. My dad said we would be heading out on Saturday instaed of Sunday to head home. I was a bit bummed about that but didn't argue, he brought the trailer and set up this whole hunt for us. My dad is absolutely awesome. Anyways, this would mean tomorrow would be our last day hunting.... Do or die! I said, I am going back into that spot! I know there is a bull in there. The rancher said he new a good spot and would take my brother. So I was solo the next day... The last day. I got my stuff together. And loaded the truck. Got my lunch together and put it in my pack. When I parked the truck, I decided to go light and just took my gun and my knife and binos. I left my pack in the truck. I walked in about 200 yards as smooth and quiet as I have ever moved... My legs were screaming at me... And I saw this...
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg162/foxtail-offroad/2015%20Moose%20hunt/20150918_083206_zps8cvvfgdf.jpg (http://s248.photobucket.com/user/foxtail-offroad/media/2015%20Moose%20hunt/20150918_083206_zps8cvvfgdf.jpg.html)

They were looking in my direction but couldn't see me or couldn't tell what I was or couldn't care less but they didn't move and I just kept going after a couple pics. I was feeling awesome at this time and thinking I might actually pull this off. I was in about 600 yards and I heard a big huff to my right in some real thick stuff. I couldn't see anything. Then I heard the thumps of something heavy going away, another huff and it was gone. I peeked my head into the timber but could see nothing.... Was that my chance? Did I just blow this? My plan was to make my way to the end of the road to a clearing and settle in and call till light was almost gone and work my way out. So I stuck to my plan. Made it to the clearing and spent a couple hours there. It took me 2 hours to get to the spot. I was getting hungry and thirsty and was kicking myself for leaving my pack in the truck. I made the decision to work my way back to the truck... I went just as slow and quiet. About half way back I checked a stump that looked real moosy... I do that a lot... Like every stump every time lol. Just the same stump. I took one more step and saw another bit of black about 30 yards away behind a jackpine. Nope just a stump... But above the the jackpine there were funy looking branches... They moved! He was trying to see over the tree... My bull! I crouched down so he couldn't see me and readied my gun(.270 win. Which I never had a problem with before but now am thinking something bigger would be more suited for moose) I stood up and put the crosshairs on him. All I could hear was my heart pounding in my ears... LOUD... All I could see was his horns and his chin over the tree so I gave him a quiet grunt... He lowered his head and I thought I screwed up. He turned his head to the side and I could see his neck. I thought he was going to turn and bolt so I put one through his neck. Thinking this would put him down for sure I was amazed when I saw him swing around and wobble off to his right. Favoring his back leg... W.T.F? There is no way I got him in the ass?! All I had in the scope was neck! I grunted a few more times and marked the spot on my app. I followed quietly. I heard crashing to my left and snuck around a tree. There he is! Rifle up for a follw up... Wait! No horns! A cow is with him... Jesus... I just about took the cow out. I am just jacked at this time and then I see him farther to the left limping away... I put one in the pumper and he took off again. I heard a crash about 10 seconds later and snuck up and saw this

Congrats on the successful trip. Glad I'm not the only one who has cut half their tags 2 weeks in to hunting season.
Great work, Foxtail.
J270wsm - I do not feel sad for you having the "problem" of cutting half your tags.

Once the bull was down I made a call to my dad and one to my brother to come help me. Where the bull went down, it would be a bitch to gut so I would have to try to get the truck in to try and drag it out a bit to a clearing. With a bit of chainsaw work I got the truck in close enough to tie on and start dragging.... Snap! Rope broke... Okay... Double it up. Snap!... Umm... I was trying to triple up the 10 feet of rope I had left... Just then, the Cavalry arived. My brother and the rancher were just coming to check on me by coincidence. My brother had left his phone in camp so I had just left him a message. We hooked up a winch and with my brother and I using muscle and the winch pulling we got it to the grown in road about here.

We were able to gut and quarter the moose there with the help of my handy dandy Walmart special machete Carnivore x(more on this later). My dad and his buddy showed up to help gut and quarter aswell...(my dad loves to say "Happiness is a steaming gutpile!") and he dove right in. With a winch and some straps we got the quarters into the truck and got it back to the ranch where we skinned it out and cut away bad meat with the help of a tractor with a round bail spike :D sure makes things quick and easy. In to the butcher and 580 pounds of meat on the hook :) could not have asked for a better trip... Maybe one more moose for my bro... But I'm not greedy lol.

This was a bad photo of the coolest colour fox I have ever seen he was black and orange with the white tip on the tail. Looked very very odd and gave me a weird feeling with his big yellow eyes stairing at me. The rancher called it a cross fox.

Why do you need to put this guy down and lessen his achievement with comments like this. This kind of stuff is what makes people shy away from posting and weakens the bond between hunters that this site creates.

The smart money asks for permission. The haters too afraid to. Nice full load there. Too bad you couldn't live up to your name and have shot that cross fox. Wicked big tails. Trappers can take them though.

The machete I used for the quartering was a pleasant surprise. I got it at Walmart because of the high quality products they are known for :P It is a Camillus Carnivore X. I was looking for a smaller slimline machete for hiking and hunting and this one fit the bill. I checked reviews online and they were mixed for the Carnivore and slightly better for the X model. Most stating they could only get a year out of it.... For the price, if I get a year out of it I would be thrilled. I used it a bit last year but didn't really need it much as I didn't get much hunting or hiking in. It works great for everything, has a saw on the back of the blade, chissel tip and is absolutely razor sharp. It also comes with a small knife(throwing knife?) that works awesome for skinning. The machete sliced through meat, hacked through ribs and sawed through backbone like butter.... For $28 I couldn't have asked for much more.

I also want to point out how awesome my camo wool jacket and pants are. It is made by Columbia PHG. The first day it was warm... Very warm, like 24 degrees C. I had a tshirt under my jacket and was not too hot. It cooled down after that day and even froze overnight a few days. I have had this stuff for at least 5 years and love it more every time I use it. I have used it in pouring rain, -17 degrees and snowing and now even heat and have never been uncomfortable. Because it is wool it is natural scent control and completely silent. It is the least expensive wool outer wear I have found anywhere.

Thanks gentlemen. Hopefully I will find some time and be able to get up to the upper Pitt or one of the islands in Pitt or Harrison Lake for a Blacktail with my bow. Either Thanksgiving or my Birthday.
