Going on my first goat hunt next week and would like some advice on tips on making sure it is a billy goat. Practical advice.

Also, what do you do if you get it wrong?

-Base circumference of the horn should be bigger than the eye.
-Billy's are generally on their own or with 1 or 2 others.
-look for glands at the base of the back of horns
-horns have a gradual tapper (see regs) as opposed to a short bend at the tip on the nanny ( not always visible)
-if all else fails get close and look for nuts

This time of year decent billies will be alone or with another billy for the most part. Male horns tend to curve like a banana all the way while a females tend to come straight up from the head and then curve back. Not sure about your other question, not illegal to take a nannie if your really not sure don't shoot.Check out threads on here for goats lots of pics of billies have been posted in the past on here. One more thing when it comes to billies if you can't fit another horn between the two horns you have a billy with good bases. Hope this helps a bit and good luck.

If your not rushed, wait for them to piss. When they'r facing away, a lot the time you can spot the "manhood".

^^^ these guys nailed it.

Good luck, 4 more sleeps and I'm out also.

Cheers.

Got 17 out of 18 on that Alaska F&G test, not counting that 19th question where it's just WTF. Woohoo. Never goat hunted, being from VI, but have always wanted to try.

x2 what everyone said..one thing I noticed is the nannys and kids are usually a bit lower, the billys seem to be closer to the top in the more rugged shit...but the best lesson is be prepared to walk away...too much emphasis on coming home with something promotes regrets..

All great advice and true. Do not be in a hurry. It will take you a while to get to the goats. Take a long time to watch them/it before you make your decision. Horn shape and size are true but I've seen a nanny with horns that fooled 2 hunters and a CO who inspected them. Watch for the gland and try to get above to observe, if you can. Billies can be much dirtier from rolling in dirt. Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, what do you do if you get it wrong?

Cut the tag, debone, pack her out and make sausage. The hide will also make a fine throw rug for the chair.

Lesson learnt for the next tag . . . many a guide and experienced hunter has taken a nanny by mistake.
