Last night around 9 or 9:30, the wife and I were sitting at the fire pit roasting some hotdogs and chatting, when we heard this really weird noise in the trees behind one of my pastures. The only way I can describe it is to say it was high pitched like a hawk, but sounded like a cat fighting. But not a pitch I've heard from any cat or member of the cat family that I've heard before. Did a search with the flashlight, didn't see anything, but the alpacas were quite excited! Not in snipe or samsquatch country, so it's not that (I know the suggestion was coming LOL). Any ideas?

Owls can make some pretty crazy noises. Screeching howling type noises.

Maybe, did have that thought, but it seemed like it was at ground level, not that you can trust the direction of noise.

Hawk owl..sounds like a woman getting throttled. Very un-nerving even if you have heard it before. Like 300run700 mentions, cougars can make the hair on your back stand up.

Well, I got the dogs and the wife inside and did a scan with a flashlight and rifle, no sign of anything, but I'll be keeping a close eye on things from here on.

I heard M Dean was on a bit of tear last night. Now much ground between Kamloops and Vernon.

Could be a fox? They make some eery sounds.

Are you sure it wasn't one of your alpaca's alerting

One of my llama's was alerting at 1 am. this morning and I went outside to check and there was a bear in the yard.

I have heard some rabbits make some horrible sounds when attacked. Some similar to a cat but more human. I have also seen fly close to the ground, maybe 8' to 10', so that could explain the ground level from a distance

I heard M Dean was on a bit of tear last night. Now much ground between Kamloops and Vernon. I'll have you know, Sir! Between the hours of 9:pm and 10:pm last evening I was buck ass'ed naked on the roof of my house howl'in at the moon! I guess I didn't take my "Bi-Polar" Med's again, at least that's what they told me just before I got "Tasered!"

9am -10pm on the roof ... and without your camo gear? That's 13 hours FFS! Are you sure it was the moon you were howling at and not the neighbours wife? Glad they got you down in one piece though.

Nope. Not that, if I heard that I'd probably assume it was human.

Last year my mother in law up near 100 mile heard what she thaught was a woman screaming in the woods flanking her hey fields. She ran out towards the sound half expecting to save a woman from her attacker and when she shone her flashlight into the brush it turned out to be 2 jungle cats in the matting act. She wasn't sure what kind of cats they were , but bigger than a house at by a lot is all she could say.

elk barks can sound really interesting the first time you hear them at night alone in a tent.

Are there porcupines in the area?

Cougars make chirping noises to communicate to each other. Depending where you were, could also be a cow elk.
