Went out from mid-day til last light last night. Nailed this guy in the last 5 minutes or so of legal light. Went to one of my go-to spots, a hike-in of about 1 km, sat down in one area while my brother watched another..didn't see a thing until I heard a bit of rustling, stand up on a rock to look around, and this guy is peering around a tree just staring at me..I catch him in my binos, all I can see is his neck, plus his white rings around his eyes to tell me he was WT, as his antlers were hard to tell from staring at him dead straight..and I couldn't see his ass end to verify from his tail, but I've had enough identification practice over the years to definitely tell he was a whitetail..so I slowly put down the binos, and luckily I ranged the tree behind him to be only about 85 yards, so I know he's only about 75..so I then slowly pull up my gun to my shoulder, and could see that a standing shot was my only option..I practice shooting quite a bit, so I was confident in my shot standing, even though I only had his neck to aim for..
So then to my surprise, he's still standing perfectly still just staring at me, I have him in my scope, take a deep breath, hold aim,,,,boom! I see he instantly drops, I quickly load another and watch for about 5 minutes, no movement, so I proceed to go find him..sure enough, I nailed him, poked him in the eye with my gun..yup he's dead...I then call my brother over, and he's stoked, as this was his first kill he's been around...Then the fun began, my brother forgot his carry-out pack, so we decided after field dressing him to tie his legs to an old log, and carry him out pole-style on our shoulders..we packed him out this way all the 1 km back to our truck, over dead-fall, stumps, all of that...took us about 2 hours to get him back to the truck, by the time we were done skinnin him it was 2:30 am this morning...he's all quartered and in coolers with ice now, my brother, a buddy and I will butcher him tommorow...even though it was all extremely hard work, my brother definitely likes hunting more now and will definitely be a more dedicated hunting partner for me from now on...
