Get yourself one of those new flexible rubber handles. They allow you to chop around corners.

Mikey, I will rehandle your axe. You crazy if you are buying a new one. Unless it's one of those plastic shits.
Granfors or Hultafors or Husqvarna or Wetterlings.
Any of those Swedes are good but hard to find.

Or even better you buy the new axe and give me the old axe head and I will rehandle it for myself

I've also been very pleased with my fiskars. They lack the aesthetic pleasure of a wood handled axe, but the quality is hard to ignore. They even go on sale now and then at Canadian tire.

Cheers,
Brad

Large axe-I have and prefer an Iltis Oxhead

Medium-Granfors is the nicest, but, with careful choice of the handle wood and some file work to re-profile the head, Wetterlings are cheaper and made in the same facility in Sweden.

For rough uses, I also have a Fiskars.

I need a Granfors traditional original "bearded axe" for my sporadic adventures when channeling one of my Viking ancestors, Axel Bloodaxe, but, they cost BIG. Someday.......

If you use your axe a lot get a gransfors Bruks if you don't use it a lot get one of those fiskars. The gransfors Bruks shouldn't fail you and you can pass it down to your kids. The fiskars you can use and abuse and buy another when it fails.

I bought the cheap Fiskars weed puller, it bust.
I took a photo, sent it to them via email and voila, brand new one sent to me within a week.
A year later it bust again. They replaced again with no reciept and this time gave me the best one they sell.

I have their axe and hatchet, I'd like to get their splitting wedge next. Good company. Good tools.

The fiskars arnt bad with heavy use the handles can fail and the steel isn't as good. They will require more attention then a gransfors Bruks. The fiskars can do everything just fine but more prone to break with heavy use.

My group of buds and I chop approx 20 chord/year. We all have owned various types over the years. The Fiskar long handle is slowly becoming the go too for all of us. If your a taller guy, the long handle is a necessity.

Last year my axe handle broke I love that axe my favorite axe but now I have to buy a new one. What do u suggest Jeez, maybe I'm a tad behind the times here, you know, liv'in out of town and all, but when I break a axe handle, or my splitting maul handle, or hell, even my hammer handle, bout the last thing I'd do is ask what kind'a axe, and or handle I should buy on a public hunting web site? But, hey, like I said earlier in my comment here, I don't live in no fancy town or a big city, so I guess you folk do thing's a bit different than us Backward Ass Country F***'s. Good luck on pick'in out the right handle there. And, you mind if I asked were bout's you work Mr. boehm? Just wonder'in?

It's hard to find a decent handle here (I even started a thread a couple days ago looking for advice on where to go) I've been to 9 different stores in Langley in the past few days and there isn't a handle for my double bit axe head at any of them.

Want an axe for a lifetime? Get yourself some solid bar stock aluminum shaped to fit in an axe head, I like the 10# Trojan. Had one built 14 years ago when I was still cutting shake blocks. Can't break it. Back in those days I used to be able to bitch slap them wood handles to pieces at will. Make the handle short too, better aim and less chance of nutting yourself. I prefer 24". Can't remember what I used to shape the handle to my liking but aluminum is very easy to work with, band saw a couple inch slot for wedges to go inside head to keep tight.

Very impressed, this is what I enjoy most about HBC, the exchange of experience-based practical info. by those who do things.

What weight is your axehead?

I believe it's a 10# head, more of a chopping style axe but it'll power through anything. We used to call em 'Trojan' heads, but mine is stamped 'Hytest'

Iltis, look at cascade marine and supply in Chilliwack, or order from IRL in prince George. Might find at Lee Valley as well

Cascade and IRL also carry handles. Home Hardware has good handles sometimes.

Just bought a wetterlings. She's a beauty. Even fits in my day pack which is a huge plus. Handle is well designed. Maybe do some digging and see if you can order a handle from them to put on your axe head.

Only problem I have with the fiskars is that the head is made of some pretty soft metal. But side by side with other axes and it splits better and is easier to swing...
