OK I am new to this, so no flames please. Saw this track in the mud yesterday, near where a bear was eating clover. First thought was bear, but then it is kind of small. Toe pads to heel is maybe 2.5"

It looks like overlapping deer tracks. What you thought were toe pads look like dew claws. I would say these are heading down in the picture. Its hard to tell without reference maybe they are moose. I think they both overlap their tracks at times. That's my guess.

that is a hard track to tell looks like a bear to me only because of the difference in the toes size to one another

In my expert opinion:lol: it looks like 3 tracks, the bottom 2 tracks looks like a calf moose, I say moose because of the pointed hoofs and calf because of its size on comparison to the alder leaf.

The top track looks like a black bear mainly because it looks like the pads on the track have obscured and flatened out the lower tracks and you can see round toe pads but no claws. Since black bears have been known to go after youngsters of any species I think this makes sense, he's tracking the moosie.8-)

Gee, and I thought all you knowledgable fellows would give it a slam dunk! I see two toes and four dewclaws if it is an ungulate, thought they only had one dewclaw?

Looks like the ground was once muddy but has firmed up since the animal isn't sinking in that deep, in conditions like that you wouldn't see dew claws unless the animal was on a run or stott. The toe angles would be different too

If its only 2.5 inches from front to back it seems a little small in comparison to the alder leaf.

Get better photos of more tracks next time, this one is crappy:)

Here is my "guess". brambles is right, you wouldn't see the dew claws unless the deer is sinking 2inches or more into the mud. The leaf is from a blackberry bush and they are usually about 2 1/2-3 inches across so I would say the track is about 4 inches or more front to back. I don't see any claw marks what would be present if it was a black bear. The sharp part that looks like a deers toe could also be from a dislodged stone like the one at the bottom of the track. Also the heel is not pointed enough to be a bear's hind foot and the toes are not in the right proportion to one another. My guess is that someone stuck their hand in the mud to make a "bear track". If not there should be more tracks in that mud from the travelling animal or animals that could give a good idea of what it/they are.

We need some of those "never-get-nuthin" type hunters to make some soup with that track............they should be able to identify it then.

Looks like an older whitetail deer / moose track with a bear track on top. The ground also looks like firm clay and without more photos futher up the trail its hard to tell exactly. Also some size reference ex Rifle shell and your boot print beside the print would help too.

The leaf is off of an alder tree. This guy was nearby, but I don't think he is the source. The picture does give an idea of the area. Just off of the Chehalis FSR.
