Going out on my first hunt this Saturday. Going to be looking for whitetail in 8-9.
We're going to get up there about 5 a.m. and just hike through a few clearings. I'm still really green so no shots will be happening more than 50 yards, just because I want to be safe. Any advice? I imagine it will be quite busy up there on opening weekend.
Thanks in advance, love this site!

When hiking try not to make a destination or time limit it will cause you to rush. Just go wih the flow and pick the quite routes you see.

Scout the area before you go so you know where you are going and can get away from the crowds.

Even an hour from the road puts a lot of real estate between you and all the road hunters.

Step once, look twice. Enjoy the moment, opening day is a special day.

The spot we're going has a forestry road running through it but it is about a 2-3km hike from the main road. Hoping it's quiet but if not we have a few other spots up our sleeve.
Thanks guys, I think I'm book smart enough but this practical experience business has me nervous! Can't wait to get my feet wet. Hoping that by going early season we can have a good feel for the area come late October.

Play the wind or stay in the truck. Spend more time listening and looking than moving.

Man it's supposed to be hot on the day we hunt, close to 30 degrees at the heat of the day. Other than processing quick and getting the meat cooled, any tips? I imagine the deer will probably just sleep all day and we'll be doing more scouting than anything. Does anyone have experience hunting on hot days?
