So I hope I've been hearing what is hopefully BS that you now as of September 1st have to buy grouse tags for each individual species? Can someone please confirm? I've been looking all over the government website with no luck

coach

Yup. I bought 15 the other day. 5 each for blue, spruce and franklin. Hope to fill them once the season opens. Just hoping the youth season slaughter doesn't kill the entire population before they open for the rest of us.

Vancouver, BC, Sep 1, 2015

With Premier Clark at his side, Mimister Steve Thomson announced changes to the wildlife act requiring BC hunters to purchase grouse tags for the 2015 season. "In order to ensure the success of GOABC member's individual businesses this government has had to look for additional revenue sources. Resident hunters will now be required to purchase grouse tags at a cost varying between $1.25 to $2.15 each. Separate species tags are required for each variety of grouse in the province. All revenues from this program will be directed into a special "outfitter viability fund" to assist GOABC members who have fallen on hard times, suffered divorces, or simply don't have enough allocation of trophy animals to maintain profitability."

Just got fined 3x250$ and my license pulled by a CO roadblock on North Fraser road: 3 grouse, not tag, I could not identify subspecies and my dog had blood on his snout (they dropped the ticket for unnecessary cruelty to game animals). If you read the footnotes on the species and tag amendment there is a condition enabling you to save 20%. Paragraph 2 in subsection 1 says that if you pay cash and purchase grouse tags after the LEH draw and before Sept 1st you will receive 5 for the price of 4. Small consolation but it helps take the sting out a little.

Are non-resident bird hunters exempt from buying tags? The way this is worded it makes it seem that way. If so, what a piss off!

I did hear something about more birds being allocated to foreigners and taken away from residents, but if they don't have to pay their share, that's totally effed!

Put the tags? You need attach them to the intact portion of the bird showing proof of sex, the comb if its a rooster or the egg laying bits on the rear end of a hen. Its a PITA but its for the cause recommend very small zap straps they work great...

yes, unfortunately as of the new 2015 hunting allocations we now need to purchase grouse tags, you must take the grouse with a maximum of a .22 caliber long rifle and it must be on private land. and as for the compulsory inspection you need a tooth aswell as a tail feather from each bird. if you want to maximize your grouse hunting luck they now have a new guide outfitter in fort Mac that specializes in blue grouse.
all the best

the shittiest part of these regs is their fan requirement.
nothing under 7" fanned tail.
before you could just should whatever grouse you saw.
now, you have to sit and watch them for way too long, waiting for them to strut and fan their tail.
most times, you have to spook them to get them to ruffle up, which leads to then haven't to take in-flight shots.
it used to be so easy, like moose hunting, but now we have to sit and watch and do sight-measurements before shooting.

wholesale just got a shipment in, they sold out quick cause no one knew they needed them, I got about 10 tags, a bullet stretcher and a bag of air for my backpack survival kit.
be careful out there folks, and happy trails I tried that bullet stretcher from WSS too, bloody thing, I put the 22 shells in the small end, ran it through my press, and I got 30-06 bullets out the large end? Followed the instructions to a tee, 5 or 6 times, I want dam 300 Win Mag bullets for moose, not 30-06 bullets for bloody Marmot!!! It's going back first thing tomorrow! If you don't mind me asking RS, what did you pay for the Air? Used the last one up on my Grandsons WT?

Are you allowed to bait grouse like deer or is it forbidden like bears? What about baiting HBC members?

Are you allowed to bait grouse like deer or is it forbidden like bears? What about baiting HBC members? Baiting Grouse is Illegal in B.C.! As is baiting Bear, and as far as talking about Illegal activity's on this Site, that's also Forbidden Sir! And as far as "Baiting HBC Members" go's, it's a "No Holds Barred" ruling! And, believe me, it'd take a pretty good man to pull the sheep over my eyes Sir!

The tags are rumored to be like the metal clip tags used many years ago and were threaded through the animal's ear. Also evidence of sex must be documented and submitted. They reportedly are trying to establish a male to female ratio.

Been seeing a lot of pick up trucks parked at the side of roads with big coolers in the back.
Apparently they are selling "harvested" grouse, you can get them head on, head off, filleted, however you want.
Price is the same as the tags cost.
Might pick up a few dozen for the freezer.

If you don't have your tags by now, your out of luck...their All Sold Out, for this year.

Here's a few scenarios I thought could happen due to lack of grouse tags available,

scenario 1;

I managed to get my hands onto only one of those grouse tags this year it was the last one they had, I've cut it like eight times already since I can't find any more tags. Hope that's OK to do cause I'm gunning for ninth & tenth cut soon on the same grouse tag. Won't be much left of the tag by end of season.
Wonder if I can do the same with any sort of tag? could save some $$ just buying one tag, works for salmon and steelhead, and think of the all the extra pages saved in my hunting license, this years season is going to rock, why didn't I think of this sooner.
Thanks for the idea you guys are awesome.

or

scenario 2;

Shucks I didn't know about the grouse tags this year, and by the time I did there were none available, so I'm just keeping a record of where & when the dog & I bag a grouse in my note book, I'll turn myself in after the season (Jan 1st) hope someone's there to answer the door, might cold out that day.

you decide.

From CO service:
Grouse in Your Community

If you see a grouse in your community remain calm. Often the grouse is just passing through looking for food.
Keep away from the grouse, bring your children and pets indoors and warn your neighbours.

If the grouse is threatening, persistent or aggressive, call the Conservation Service Officer in your area or your local police.

Grouse in the Wild

Every grouse encounter is unique so there are no steadfast rules which can be applied to every situation.
If you meet a grouse in the wild, try to remain calm. Never approach or chase the grouse, instead face the grouse without making eye contact and back away slowly. Take the same route out that you came in. Try to keep track of the grouse's location, but again, don't challenge the grouse by making eye contact.
If the grouse makes blowing or snorting noises and then charges and veers off at the last second this is likely defensive behavior so continue to back away.
Extend your arms above your head appearing as large as you can, talk in a gruff voice, and look for a weapon such as a .375 H&H. Try dropping your pack to distract the grouse, but only do this if absolutely necessary because the grouse could learn to pursue people for their packs.
Climb a tree as a last resort. Pee on the grouse. This might work to deter the grouse, but in rare cases may cause arousal

Normally I'm quick to find the humour in anything, but it's totally lost on me this time
