The Alaskans negotiated state control of their fisheries around the time Alaska became a state. The thinking was that local management of their fisheries would be more effective than federal fisheries management from DC. Time has proven the Alaskans were right, based on the current strength of their fisheries, landing 35 million pieces in the sockeye fishery in2015, for example.

Other, admittedly inland, provinces manage their own fisheries without assistance from FOC (DFO).

In BC, the Freshwater Fisheries Society has done an outstanding job of managing and stocking lakes. Such a good job that the BC government has turned over responsibility for managing this resource and directs all or a portion of fishing license revenue to them. Regs still handled by the province.

It is time that the BC government took ownership of the management and regulation of tidal fisheries as well, IMO.

Shouldn't we, as a province be managing this critical resource for the same reasons as the Alaskans?
