During a VI holiday last week I asked my 15 year old step son if he wanted to go for a morning moose hunt when we got home. He said that sounded good and even agreed to the 3:30 am wake up. So I bought licence and tags in Langford so we could start early on the Monday without waiting for stores to open in the north. We arrived at the cut block I wanted to walk about ten minutes later than I would have liked. I said to the boy we should walk from here. He said why, there's a moose right there. Sure enough he had spotted a cow feeding in the cut, a quick look around revield another cow. So I told him this is the spot and now with full daylight we should be on foot. So I pulled the truck off the old road and we started our hike. We made it about 80 yards from the truck when I noticed movement about 200 yards away. After lifting the Binos I was able to tell him we found our bull. He followed me as I used log plies to hide behind as we closed a bit of distance. I then shot at about 180 yards hitting him, he wobbled and layed down. As we approached he stood up and I was able to finish him at 100 yards. It was a nice bull and I was so happy to have the boy with me to witness his first big game harvest. We worked hard and my stepson saw all aspects of dealing with a large moose. The quarters were heavy so the help he gave me was very appreciated. We got the atv to the kill site and we're able to load up a front and a hind and take them the short distance to the truck, it took two trips.
The rack was 45 inches wide and was 3x4 on the brow, and the cleaned, skinned quarters weighed 595 lbs on the meat cutters scale.
It was a great hunt and a good experience for a kid deciding if he wants to take up hunting
Cheers Mike
