I hope this is not going to be too controversial here. I've done this in the past, and I am about to do it again. Would like to get some refresher points on this. Do's, dont's, suggestions and all that comes with it.

A couple of us are going to try our hand at bow fishing carp here in a couple days. We can let you know how it goes and if you would be able to snorkle in the shallows.

Make a quick call to HTO in Victoria, ask for Mick (owner)
He has best gear available, and a wealth of knowledge, very easy to talk to, well worth the time.

I would have typed the same thing if spear hadn't beat me to it. I got my gear from him and a bunch of info.

i wanted to get into spear fishing but didn't want to spend a lot of money, so i ordered an 80 spear gun from the internet ,pick it up in the states (yes you can bring it across the border no problems). its tons of fun! I've only been out a handful of times, but we go for ling cod. me and a couple friends have sets of dive gear and usually have the best luck at between 45 and 60 feet. pm if you have more questions

I thought ling cod were closed on the coast. When did they reopen? I used to spear fish back when I was active in SCUBA. The best tips I have for you are:

NEVER EVER shoot a 20+ pound halibut - it will tow you deep and FAST if you don't let it take all your gear with it - sigh;

make sure you have quick release clips on your goodie bag when you are around seals and whales - yes I said whales, big black and white killer whales;

6 - 10 pound ling cod are best eating.

Just had a pleasant memory to share though- I was diving at the breakwater in Victoria (great dive btw) and as you might imagine there are lots of people fishing off the blocks... this one day at the surface I noticed a little kid and her dad fishing so I slipped under-water and found her line and gave it a few big pulls, I let her play with me for about ten minutes and then slowly came to the surface - the look on her face was priceless! After that I went down and brought up a starfish, an urchin, and sea cucumber for her to touch and enjoy. Fun.

Properly equipped freedivers are taking 100lb+ halibuts routinely these days.

That's pretty spectacular. What I'm dying to know, though, is if there's any use for them? Smoker? Dog food? Fertilizer for your tomatoes?

i think you are correct the coast is closed, but there are some areas around the gulf islands that are open, a pretty short boat ride from point roberts or captians cove.

I havent spear fished only bow or slingbow fished, but yes the okanagan is a great place to start. Ive bow fished for them in salmon arm with great results, almost 100 shot opportunities one day. shouldnt be too hard to find a few snorkelling.

I've just started getting into freedive spearfishing. Hoping the visibility starts getting better around here again so I can get back out...

Used to do it back in SK quite a bit for pike, walleye and perch.... Is a lot of fun if you get into the fish. Too bad you cant shoot game fish here, thought trout would be a challenge. Still have all the gear but have never done it in bc. Thought about going for burtbot once but didn't have a buddy around. If anyone around Kamloops wants to go I could likely be convinced.
