With a loud growl, the wounded wolf lunged toward Jason dragging its back legs behind it. It was down, but not out. We were without a gun and had to think on our feet. I couldn’t just sit there and wait for it to die. Maybe a rock to the head would kill it? Of course, there wasn’t a rock in sight. I grabbed my knife and cut down a ten foot tall sapling. Using my knife, I fashioned a crude spear point. I would have to sneak up behind the wolf while Jason distracted it from the front. But, before we get to that, let me first tell you how I got into this ticklish spot in the first place.

Please keep reading the story published here, it's free:

I read your story as soon as the email reminder for the new issue came out. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm an accountant, so I can't provide any writing suggestions, other than to keep righting and sharing your stories. I look forward to more!

cool story! Did you have a max word limit on the story? I would have liked to read a bit more about you connecting on your elk. Next time you should tell buddy to carry a few more shells in his pocket or something haha. I had the nickname 3 bullets for a while because of a similar scenario. nice pictures too!

Great Story and adventure for you Dave ! Congrats and ..... well how many can say they have dispatched a Wolf with a stick !

I wrote several articles over many years for various hunting, fishing and outdoors magazines, help pay for a few several Dream hunts I took through a few Packers. I like your writing and look forward to another Rosie adventure story this fall !

Yes I voted for you. CT

We didn't know there was a cabin there. We were just planning on setting up the wall tent in that field, and when we got there we found the cabin.

The story is actually 2700 words, my first draft was over 6000. I went into a lot more detail on everything. However I need to keep the reader from falling asleep. I wanted it under 2000 words, hopefully no one just skipped to the end.

Great story thanks for sharing. I've often heard that the elk are small antlered up there, all 5 points cause the 6x genes are all shot out blahblahblah. You guys proved that wrong, couple dandy bulls! Congrats and nice work with the spear.
Personally I could handle the long version with more detail on your bull as well. I enjoy the seemingly insignificant details of a hunt, helps me get a feel for being there.
